Thomas Carter

(1 Feb 1699/1700 - 1 Dec 1776)

Thomas and his sister Katherine were twins. The first four children in the family, including the twins, are said to have been born in "Gloucester att Mr. Wm. Thorntons". This would have been at Thomas's mother's home - she probably went there to have her babies among the servants that had taken care of her.

Thomas likely owned his father's homeplace on Corotoman River in Lancaster Co VA.

There is a diary of Col. James Gordon, a neighbor, in which Thomas is mentioned serval times. Some of the diary obviously dealt with controversy between the Episopalian minister, Mr. Criswell, and Mr. Waddell, the Presbyterian minister. Neither minister is given a first name. It was interesting to find a connection between the Carters and Waddells this early. Mentioned in the diary, 29 Apr 1762, is a funeral for Mrs. "Whale", probably the mother of Anne Wale, Thomas Carter's second wife - Mr. Waddell preached there to a large number of people. On 13 Feb 1763, Mr. Waddel proposed ten person for elders to include Mr. Thomas Carter [and a Mr. Chichester - the only other time I've seen this name is Chichester Mathews who married one of the Walters daughters in Pittsylvania Co VA.]

Earlier in 1745 and 1745, Thomas Carter was a member of the vestry of Christ Church.

The will of Thomas Carter of Christ Church Parish, Lancaster, was written 1 Dec 1776 and probated on the 19th. He made bequests to six sons, five daughters, his daughter in law [step-daughter], and his cousin[probably a nephew] Dale Carter. One daughter, Lucy who married John Smithers, 11 Nov 1761, is not named and probably died without issue.
