Noel Waddill

( - Bef Jul 1807)

The Halifax Co Tax Rolls of 1785 list both a Noel and a William Waddill. Also there are land patents to both a Noel and William in Albemarle Co VA some years earlier - Noel Waddill, 23 May 1763, 400 acres, both sides South fork of Cary's Creek. William Waddill on 15 Jun 1773, 400 acres, both sides south fork of Cary's Creek. Examination of these patents reveals that this Noel Waddill died before 1773, leaving the land to his heirs: John Waddill Junr, Abel Waddill, Pridgen Waddill, William Waddill & Richard Adams [presumably married to a daughter]. The patent had lapsed, no rents paid nor cultivation or improvements done, and William Waddill made humble suit for a new grant - he could be the son William, or another William entirely. The Book The Majors and Their Marriages by James Branch Cabell, c. 1915, has assigned the Noel born in 1730 to William & Sarah as the same man who died holding the patent in Albemarle Co, quite possibly because one of his sons was named Pridgen and this Noel of William & Sarah had an uncle named Pridgen Waddill and perhaps a brother named Pridgen - the only occurences I've found of this name. Certainly the Noel of the Albemarle patent is not the same Noel who paid tax in Halifax County in 1785, nor can he be a son of that man.

The Noell Waddill listed in Halifax Co on the list of J. W. P. Martin in 1785 had in his household 6 white souls, 1 dwelling, and 2 outbuildings. William Waddill was listed with 6 white souls only, no dwelling.

A marriage record in Halifax is a Polly Waddill to Thomas Stanfield, Nov. 1799; William Waddill, father of the bride.

I believe this William Waddill also lived, or at least owned land, in Pittsylvania Co.

That the older Noel Waddill found in Pittsylvania Co was married to a Martha is indisputable. Martha is mentioned as his wife in a deed in 1795.

Found in online database. Pittsylvania Court Order Book 10, p.504. July 1807 "Martha Waddill, widow and relict of Noel Waddell dec'd and Charles Waddell having been summoned to appear here this day to declare whether they or either of them will take upon themselves the administration of the estate of Noel Waddill deceased and failing to appear it is ordered that the sheriff take the said estate into his hand and administer the same according to the future orders of this court."

The online database does have the birth - 17 Aug 1730 - at St. Peters Parish, New Kent Co, VA - of Noel Waddill, son of William and Sarah. Noel was baptised on 27 Sep the same year. This database has made the Noel born in 1730 as the same as the Noel who lived in Pittsylvania Co and whose wife was named Martha, but as I explained earlier, that Noel seems to have died before 1773. There is no proof offered for Martha's surname, and has an estimated marriage date of 1755 from the births of the children [which are also estimates]. However, the marriage of daughter Frances in 1779 would indicate that likely Noel was a father as early as 1760 if not earlier. That does make a birth year of 1730 or something close to that feasible.

The online database differs at this point from the manuscript of Mrs. Stacy. She thought this Noel Waddill who was father of Charles and found in Pittsylvania Co was the same as Noel Waddill who lived in Halifax Co VA and married there in 1786 to Elizabeth Carter. Note below that Noel Waddill was "of Halifax Co in 1784" when he bought his first tract of land in Pittsylvania Co. Both Waddill families found in Pittsylvania Co and Halifax Co have connections to Carter families but they seem to be unrelated Carters. I suspect the Waddills are all related in some way and there are possibly two different Noels present. The records of Halifax Co need to be studied more carefully to see if there is still a Noel Waddill living there after this Noel appears in Pittsylvania Co.

Frankey Waddell married Joseph Gholston 26 Aug 1779 in Halifax County. Father was listed as Noel Waddill.

Another record from Halifax Co VA is the will of John Carter, WB 1, p.370, dated 18 Jun 1781. He named his beloved wife Mary. Daughers as Ann Waddill, Elizabeth Carter, Mary Carter, Sally Carter; his three oldest sons as Richard, Theoderick and Robert Carter. He gave the land whereon he was living to son James Carter. Also named son Francis Carter. Wife to be Executrix, and Mr. William Boyd and brothers, Richard and Theo. Carter to be Executors. The witnesses were: Benjamin Hobson, David Bates, Charles Carter, Noel Waddill, and Theo. Carter.
There had been a marriage from Anne Carter to William Waddill on 27 Jul 1779, prior to the writing of this will. The marriage from Noel to Elizabeth Carter didn't take place until 1786.

Here are various Pittsylvania records I have concerning the Waddills. Since they are not my primary research, I may have missed some of the records while viewing the films:
The first record I found is in Deed Book 6, p.p.438 30 Dec 1784 Thomas Wynne to Noel Waddill of Halifax Co. 350#'s. Tract in Pittsy both sides of Sandy Creek of Dan River. 606 acres. Corner James Scales line, to Hammonds, Robert Williams's line, James Wood? [probably Woody's] Line, Roger Atkinsons line, Edward Burgess line, John Seals line. Signed: Thos. Wynne

16 May 1785. Proved by three of witnesses
[One Nathaniel Waddill I have located received a Revolutionary pension in Nottoway Co VA for his service in the Revolution. He is said to have been a son of Richard, grandson of William & Sarah Waddill, and had brothers named Noel and Richard. His brother Noel is said to have gone to South Carolina. The 1820 census for Spartanburg SC does have a Noel Waddill over age 45 and several younger Waddills in 1830.
The 1820 and 1830 censuses both show Nathaniel Waddell in Halifax Co VA. In fact in 1820 there are two entries that seem to be the same people - a male and a female both over age 45. The entries for the slaves are different and so are the neighbors. Perhaps he had two plantations. IN 1830, Nathaniel was listed as age 40-50, born between 1780-1870, a single person. He should have been older if he was the same as the man from 1820. Nor does he seem quite old enough to have been the witness on this deed in 1785. Of course there could have been an error in his age.
In 1830, there was also a Josiah W. Waddle, age 30-40, in Halifax Co.]

This 1785 deed predates the first land entries for Noel which all seem to involve the same tract of land as above, or nearby. It seems that title may have not been good for the land he bought of Thomas Wynne and he was trying to increase his holdings:

The Pittsylvania Tax Records show Noel Waddill for the first time in 1786 - with the 606 acres purchased from Thomas Wynne. In 1790, the above 124 acres from J. Seal was also listed. There was no Sr or Jr designation on either of these and Noel Jr doesn't show up on the tax roles until 1795. I suspect I may have misread the above deed from James Seal. Although all the other lands of the Waddills change from time to time, Noel continues to pay tax on the 124 acres through 1802.

One Deed Book 11, Pittsylvania Co, actually has deeds that pre-date those of Deed Books 9 & 10 - I've placed the records here in order of their dates. There is another Deed Book 11 which I have yet viewed.

Beginning with 1798, Allen and Charles each paid tax on 400 acres of what had been their father's land. Noel paid tax on his balance of 19 acres, as well as the 124 he'd paid tax on since 1790. Beginning in 1801, Noel Senr had no land listed on the tax lists - perhaps he'd reached age 60 [often the maximum age] and was exempt from tax because of age or infirmity.
