William Pippin

William was married twice. The name of his first wife & a daughter born before 1800 and shown on the 1800 census are unknown. They did have a son John.

William married (2) Winnifred Whitehurst on 9 Oct 1818 in Halifax Co NC. They had children Mary, Martha and Joseph John as named in William's Will dated 14 Nov 1849, Edgecombe Co NC. The will was proved May 1853. The will names the children of Winnifred, all of whom remained in Edgecombe Co, but not the children by the first wife.

William and family were in the 1800-1850 censuses in Edgecombe Co NC The 1850 census gives William's age as 76, or born about 1774, several years later than shown here. The decade of the 1770's is indicated for his birth by the earlier censuses as well.

Will dated 14 Nov 1849, Edgecombe Co, NC - proved during the May 1853 Term of Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions.
Provisions of his will: Debts paid and decent burial suitable to wished of family
To beloved wife Winnifred Pippen all cleared land on which their home stands - one boundary mentions Peter E. Knight's line, all corn and peas, all farming utensils, livestock. At her death all property to be sold and divided equally among my children Mary, Martha, and Joseph John Pippen, except the land.
To daughter Mary Drew - a tract of land. If she dies without children the land to Martha and Joseph John.
To daughter Martha Pippen, Negro boy Calvin. If she dies without a child he is to go to Mary Drew and Joseph John Pippen.
To my son Joseph John Pippen - all land not disposed of and the land given to my wife after her death. If should died without a child, it should go to Mary and Martha.

John Pippin, son of the first wife, moved first to Marion Co SC [1820 census] and then to Henry Co AL before 1830. He married (1) Selah Weeks. His 2nd wife & widow, Clancy, is found living in the home of her stepson, Wade Pippin, in the 1850 Henry Co AL census. The unnamed daughter by William Pippin's first wife is also believed to have gone to Alabama.

Son Joseph John Pippin, born 29 May 1824, married Mary Elizabeth Harper on 20 Jul 1852 in Edgecombe Co. They are in the 1850, 1860, 1870 censuses in Edgecombe Co and in the 1880 census in Martin Co NC. Joseph John was a private in Company G, 1st NC Artillery [10th State Troops] as J. J. Pippins and he also served in Co G, 17th NC Infantry Regt. Mary died about 1881; Joseph died 18 Jan 1891. They are buried at the Knight Family Cemetery in Edgecombe Co.
[He has been confused with Joseph Henry Pippin, son of the Joseph John who was a son of Joseph Pippin & Lucretia Knight. Joseph Henry married Sarah Elizabeth Cerry, also in 1852 in Edgecombe Co.]
