Theodorick Carter III

( - Aft Jul 1805)

Theodorick III was said to have married twice, first to an Miss Townes, 2nd to Judith Cunningham, marriage bond dated 16 Apr 1764.

Southside Virginia Genealogies:
In 1762, he witnessed a deed for his father.
21 Sep 1763 Theodorick Carter [his father], now of Halifax Co, purchased 183 acres, north side of the Dan River from John Watson of Prince Edward Co.
29 Sep 1766 He deeded the same 183 acres to his son of the same name.
1767. Charged with 3 tithes and 270 acres, Prince Edward Co.
1771. Taxed on 3 tithes, Halifax Co. Served as one of the county justices.
Oct 1779. Carter granted 2,472 acres, Pittsylvania Co. This was later deeded to his sons: 622 acres to Charles, Nov. 1792. 300 acres each to Thomas and William and 500 acres each to Jesse and Samuel in April, 1793.

Southside Virginia Genealogies notes records in Cumberland Co VA and attributes them to Thodorick's father, who had died circa 1778. Apparently they should belong to this man, although I find no other assurance that he lived in Cumberland, and they overlap his purchase of land in Pittsylvania Co [formed from Halifax]. Perhaps there is still another Theodorick Carter.
Sept 1779, Theodorick Carter was paid 15 #'s of tobacco for guarding a prisoner in Cumberland Co and he petitioned for more pay. He is listed as head of a household of 3 whites, 8 blacks, Cumberland Co, 1782 and of 5 whites, 1784.

A Theodorick Carter provided brandy and bacon to the Army during the Revolutionary War, for which he was later reimbursed in Halifax Co.

Theodorick Carter of Halifax Co VA purchased 61 1/2 acres, Pittsylvania Co, 17 Oct 1780.

Halifax Co VA Will Book 3, p.5
Sept Court 1792. Theodorick Carter was the guardian for the orphans of Smith and Susannah Lawson, orphans of Thomas Lawson dec'd. He possibly was also administrator of the estate. His guardian accounts reveal the widow was probably Martha - or at least payments of crops, pork, etc. were made to a Martha Lawson. Payments were made to Elisha & Peters Dodson. Presley Dodson rented the "high land Plantation" and William Richardson rented the river field. Negroes were hired out - Esther and Old Peter to Theodorick Carter and Sukey and her three children to Elisha Dodson.

Carter's will was dated 13 Jul 1805.
Sons: Charles, Samuel, William, Alexander, Nathaniel, Thomas, Jesse
Daughters: Elizabeth Richardson, Ann Bennett, Susannah Cabaniss
Wife not named. Nor were sons Towns and John who births had been listed in a family Bible
Executors: Son Alexander and sons-in-law Richard E. Bennett & Mathew Cabiness

Two of Theodrick III's children have been linked to the Stamps family by Stamps researchers - son William and daughter Elizabeth. It's obvious from his will that his daughter Elizabeth married a Richardson - could she have married twice?

I have that they married, 25 Oct 1786. (The date is from another researcher, and I have not documentation). Theodorick, III, will indicated he had a son, Charles. (Prince Edward County, Virginia). I have seen several researchers indicate Theodorick died in Halifax County Virginina. I am not sure which, if either, are correct. Hpe this helps.

Does anyone have information on the Charles Carter married to Lucy Barksdale?
Is there any documentation to indicate that this Charles Carter was the son of Theodorick Carter, III of Halifax County, Virginia?

Yes, thank you, I have seen reports of those two documents. My question is; how do we know that those two documents are talking about the same man? There were a lot of men with the name Charles Carter.

I found the following. It looks like the fathers of Charles and Lucy knew each other in 1783 before Charles and Lucy married in 1786. It isn't proof but I would say this supports the idea that the Charles Carter who married Lucy was the same Charles Carter who was the son of Theodorick. Now if only a male Carter descendant of Charles & Lucy can be found to do a Y-DNA test!!

sec. James Coleman, Geo. Wily, James LeGrand, Richard Carter.

I think the Richard Carter here is the brother of Theodorick-3. That is, I think this Richard Carter is the one who married Susannah Biggers, the ancestors of your sister-in-law. And also the brother of your ancestor John Carter, father of the Richard Carter who married Temperance.
