Individual Details
Matthew Tanner
(1730 - By 1809)
Databases online suggest his parents might have been a Thomas Tanner b. abt 1686 in Henrico Co VA and his wife Lucy Creed, Lucy's father a Mathew Creed. I find no documentation.
Matthew Tanner bought 198 acres in Lunenburg Co from Thomas Hawkins [Haskins? or was his wife Lucy Hawkins?] in Mar of 1752. He was charged tax on that tract in St. James Parish, Lunenburg Co, in 1764.
8 Jun 1778, Matthew deeded about 250 acres in Mecklenburg Co to his son Josiah which Josiah then sold the next year to Francis Hester. Tanner sold about 197 acres near Butcher Creek to Henry Walker, 10 Apr 1780. The tax lists of Pittsylvania Co in 1782 list 4 whites in his household; 7 whites in 1785; he had 400 acres of land. Matthew Tanner Jr was also listed in 1785.
16 Jul 1791, Pittsylvania Co, Matthew gave five slaves to his son Creed Tanner.
His will in Pittsylvania Co, dated 5 Feb 1806, names wife Lucy, sons Josiah, Matthew, Creed, and Thomas, and daughters Martha Anderson, Betsy Caldwell, and Polly Caldwell, and grandchildren Bird Lewis Tanner and Betsy Rains Walters [nee Tanner]. This will recorded 18 Dec 1809.
