Individual Details

There is apparently some confusion concerning this daughter's name. She is listed in the 1850 census as Armelia. The following deed has Mary Jane - is it possible this is not the same lady at all? In 1860 and 1880 she was again listed as Amelia - apparently there was an error in the deed as written.

There is a deed from Joshua and Polly Mabry to Joseph C. and Mary Jane [?Amelia] Thompson on 19 Sep 1845, Carroll Co DB 4, p.20, 19 Sep 1845. 74 acres on Adams Branch in Carroll Co. Then on 21 Apr 1853, DB 4, p.21, is a deed from Polly Mabry, widow of Joshua G. Mabry, relinquishing her dower right to the above. The conclusion has been drawn that Amelia/Mary Jane and her husband were to have taken care of Joshua & Polly in exchange for this land - I don't know that this is so. Perhaps this was Mary Jane's share in Joshua's estate. This land was on Adams Branch in Carroll Co. - Adams Branch is nearly on the Caroll/Floyd Co Line and runs into Burks Fork.

1860 Census, Harmony Twp in Hancock Co IL, p.446, Household 1345. Joseph was listed as "James" Thompson but this is obviously the right family. He was 43, b. VA, Amelia age 43, b. VA, Thomas A. 19, Albert L. 16, Marcella J. 14, Campbell F. 10, Nancy F. 7, Henrietta 5, Loritta, 5 months. Only the baby was born in Illinois, the others all born in Virginia. Next door was Wilson Thompson, quite possibly a relative.
