Moses Echols

(Bef 1740 - )

There are three different Moses Echols, believed to have had wives named Elizabeth. This Moses who married Elizabeth Wynne and his son Moses who married Elizabeth Terry. And a Moses who married Elizabeth Hicks, 9 Feb 1807, Campbell Co VA, who was a first cousin once removed, a son of Joseph Echols, whose father was Abraham, brother to this Moses's father Richard.

This deed from Halifax Co, VA, seems to be witnessed by the father of this Moses, and also would suggest he was at least age 14 by 1754, in order to be able to witness a deed.

Halifax Co VA Deed [Book 6, p.137]
17 Sep 1766 Richard ECHOLLS & wife Catherine of Halifax Co sold to Henry Hopson of Cumberland Co for 600 £, 274 A on N side Dan River, Halifax Co formerly Lunenburg, on Toys [Tobies?] & Burchs Crk & the branches thereof where Moses Echols, son of Richard Echols now dwells, conveyed to said Richard by William Byrd Esqr by deed in Lunenburg. Wit: Henry Farley, Jno Fredk Miller, Tho Harbour, Josiah Farley, Rec. 18 Sep 1766.

Moses married Elizabeth Wynne, daughter of Col. William Wynne. He is said by some to have died about 1785 in Tennessee, but that is certainly not this Moses Echols. He is also ometimes seen with the middle name of "Nichols" but I very much doubt that he had a middle name.

Moses Echols was dwelling on 274 acres on the north side of the Dan River, which belonged to his father, until 17 September 1766 when Richard and Sarah deeded the plantation to Henry Hopson of Cumberland County.
Halifax County charged Moses on 4 tithes in Halifax County in 1771.
Echols provided bacon, mutton, and cornmeal to the Army during the Revolution, for which he was later reimbursed.
In 1782 Halifax County listed Moses Echols head of a family of twelve with eight slaves. Three years later, thirteen were in his family. Moses and Elizabeth deeded about 127 acres on both sides of the Little Creek of Birch Creek to William Peters Martin 14 October 1785, and bought about 100 acres on the south side of Sandy Creek in both Halifax and Pittsylvania counties 8 December 1786.
Moses was a qualified voter in Halifax County in 1808
