In the 1840 Census, Goveneur Butterfield is shown with a probable spouse, age 20-30, and a female child under 5. Possibly both wife and this child died before 1845 when he married Sarah Avery.
Green Butterfield was age 30-40 and next to Goveneur
Benjamin Butterfield, had one male 10-15, and a male age 60-70; a female 50-60

In the 1850 Census, Mr. Butterfield gave his occupation as Bricklayer. He did have one wife and it was Sarah.

Sarah, age 21, b. Ohio. William H. age 3 b. Illinois, Almira, age 1, b. Illinois.
And just on the other side of Goveneur and Sarah was a Samuel Butterfield, age 33, b. PA, his wife and two young children.
