Green 'Tree Leaf','Tree' or 'Leaf' Butterfield has been interchangeable in finding actual records of this man. Some of his Records have him as 'Tree'. Some family records have him as 'Green(Leaf)''Tree' or 'Leaf' Butterfield. One Census record has him being born in New York and another Census has him being born in Vermont. His Headstone at the Gibson Cemetery has his name as " Green Butterfield ".

Green Butterfield married Elizabeth Avery on September 19, 1826 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. The Service was performed by Amaziah Hutchinson, J.P.

Green and Betsy, with their young family, came to Illinois in 1834 and settled in Precinct # 4 of the Schuyler County area.

In 1861, the Butterfield family moved to Macomb, Illinois. Green died shortly after this last move. He was 51 years 7 months and 18 days old at the time of his death. He was buried in the Gibson Cemetery.
