In 1850, Israel was in Grainger Co, TN, p.117. He was age 38, b. TN. Elizabeth was the same age, also b. TN as were all the children: Lemuel 15, Mary 12, Hannah 10, Artemessy 8, Susan A. E. 6, Rebecca 4, Wm 2, and Solomon age 4 months. Next door was Israel's brother Lemuel.

1860, Grainger Co TN, p.516, Household 1585. Israel "Waters" age 46. Farmer, b. TN. Elizabeth age 46. Polly 22, Hannah 20, Missy 18, Sirena 15, Rebecca 12, William 10, Solomon 7 and Champtiss or Champtin age 5 [female[.
In household 1588 was the eldest son Lemuel, age 26 with Manerva J. age 20.

Robert B. Walters wrote to the National Archives for copies of the Claims of Israel Walters.
Claim #5076; Israel Walters filed for reimbursement of property - foods, grain, and a black mare age 7, taken by Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Union soldiers came to his house and farm and spent two nights there - they took bacon, corn, etc. and the total claim was for $327 but only $54 was allowed and paid. Israel made claim 12 Aug 1873 and stated his age as 58 years. His address was Powder Springs Gap, Grainger Co TN. Israel stated that his son Lemuel was conscripted into the rebel Army but he later deserted and joined the 9th TN Cavalry of the Federal Army. Lemuel Walters was killed during the capture of Rebel Gen. Morgan at Bull's Gap, TN. Witnesses to the claim of Israel Walters were daughters Mincy [Missy] and Hannah Walters.

The Battle of Bull's Gap occurred from Nov 11 to Nov 13, 1864 in Hamblen & Greene Counties, Tennessee. I have found no record that Gen. Morgan was captured during the War. Lemuel has a military grave marker, Knoxville National Cemetery, Knoxville, Knox Co, TN. The dates are Sep 4 1839 - Sep 15 1864. The 1850 and 1860 censuses show that Lemuel was born likely born in 1835 and the date of death doesn't agree with his father's claim.

Fold3. Lemuel Walters, Pvt in Co. A, 1st Regt East Tennessee Cavalry (McKenzie's) CSA. Enlisted on 15 Dec 1861 for 12 months. Appears on a Muster-out Roll, Knoxville, 12 Apr 1862.
