Champless Walters

MILITARY: Champless Walters was a veteran of the War of 1812, 2nd Regt [Lillard's] of the East Tennessee Volunteers.

Early Tennessee Tax Lists, by Byron & Barbara Sistler, 1977. Champlis Walters listed in Grainger Co TN in 1821, along with Obediah and William Walters.

1830 and 1850 Campbell Co TN census are said to show only Champliss and his wife. There were apparently no children.

1850 Campbell Co TN census. 17th Subdivision. p.294b, Household239. Champless "Waters" age 57, Farmer, born VA. Elen age 54, born MD.

1860 Campbell Co TN Census; 5th Civil District, Household 228.
Champless "Wallers" age 66, Farmer, b. NC. Ellen age 58, born MD. Simpson David Wilhite, age 10, b. TN and listed as "Inmate".
In 1850 Sampson D. Wilhite is found on p.294, household 233, along with his parents Benjamin T. Wilhite and Almyria. He was age 2 months. In 1860, Benjamin Wilhite & Elmira are living next door to Champless Walters in household 227.

I Champliss Waters Considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following. 1st I will and bequeath that all my just debts be paid and my burial expenses 2nd I will and bequeath to my two brothers Lemuel and Israel Waters a certain tract or parcel of land lying in Campbell Co TN known as the Champliss Waters place. Also all personal property thereon belonging to me. Also all the house furniture. All the monies I now have on hand all my notes and other papers of value. 3rd I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Penollapa Waters her lawful Dowry for her lifetime. I hereby appoint my Brother Israel Waters sole executor of this my last Will and Testaaament hereby revoking all other wills by me made in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this the 7th day of December 1862.

The above instrument was now marked and subscribed by Champless Waters in the presence of each of us and was declared to be his last Will and Testament and we at his request signed our names hereunto as Testing:

Personally appeared in Open Court N. G. Dail & Peter Wolfenbarger the subscribing Witnesses to the foregoing Will who being first Sworn depose and say that they are personally acquainted with Champliss Waters the testator and that said Waters did make publish and declare the said instrument in their presence to be his last Will & Testament and at the time of making Said acknowledgment the Testator was of Sound mind and disposing memory to the best of our knowledge and belief.
Witness John Peterson, Clerk of Said Court at Office this 3rd day of Apr 1865.
