Josiah's parents said to be George Singleton Foster and Hannah Carr.
There is a Howard Co Missouri record.
21 Mar 1826. James S. Foster, deceased. Josiah Foster was appointed Administrator. Securities were John Adams & Silas Enyart.
Came to Crawford Co from Howard Co MO in 1835. Bought his land from Isaiah Vinsant & Frederick Hartgraves. At the time of the Civil War, he had increased his landholdings & slaves to be one of the largest owners in the county.

1f 10-15, 1f 15-20 [one of these girls would be Nancy - the other in unknown], 1f 30-40 [1st wife Nancy].
It is said that Josiah joined the U.S.Army during the Mexican War [1846-1848]. Sons George and Riley also served - George was a 1st Lt.

Born in Arkansas were Josiah 12, Andrew J. 11, Susan age 7 [she was a granddaughter]. Nancy A. Davis age 7, b. AR [ possibly another granddaughter, daughter of Nancy who married James W. B. Davis]. Thomas Foster age 19, b. MO. [He would not seem to be a son since he isn't listed in order, but he may be.] Andrew Marshell age 40, Carpenter, b. KY. and Newton Lou, age 21, Laborer, birthplace unknown.
[Susan is named as a grandchild in Josiah's will]
Slave Schedule for 1850 listed a total of 26 slaves.
History of Crawford County, AR by Clara Eno has in Chapter 5 a list of brief deed abstracts. These were apparently compiled prior to the Crawford Co courthouse fire. It's regrettable that she did offer enough information, but her purpose seemed to be an attempt to identify wives.

Josiah Foster, age 63, b. SC. The value of his real estate listed as $30,000 and his personal property as $55,820. Julia C. age 35, b. TN. Children: Charles 12 [Where was he in 1850?], Mary E. 10, Latisia 6, Emily B. 4, Alex. M. 2, and Earl age 1.
Andrew and Luanne Foster, the widow of Riley, lived nearby.
The 1860 Slave Schedule listed 78 slaves for Josiah Foster.

Josiah left a will dated 23 Apr 1870, which mentions seven surviving children by his first wife and five by his second wife. I have not seen a copy.
Died at age 74 years, 9 months, 8 days. Drowned in Lee's Creek when his foot caught in the stirrup after his horse slipped on the rocks - the water was unusually high.
Both wives are said to buried near Josiah in the Foster Cemetery in Crawford County.
