Jehu Chamberlin
(10 Jan 1716 - 28 Jan 1819)
Birth date of Jan. 21, 1716 was recorded in a family Bible - see notes for son Gurdon Chamberlin. He is NOT John - name frequently miscopied in records as John. They moved to Spencertown (now Hillsdale), Columbia Co., New York, by 1777 [actually by 1867-68 per court records listed below]. 1790 census of Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY, as "Jehiel", (2-0-1). Perhaps he or son the "John", there in 1800, age 45+, w. female, 45+. Suggest check Columbia Co. land records. Children from Colchester, Conn., baptismal records. See Glazier, Vol. 1, p. 112 for Census data ref. above. CA News has marriage date as June 7, 1744, as does DCC's FGR for this family. IGI record lists children.
CAA file #h59 for Jehu Chamberlain has a typed page, "prob. from Ward B. C. Jr." which lists 9 children & their spouses.
Refer to Chamberlain Chain, Branch 81, for Jehu's descendants. Submitted by William Robert O'Neal, 2102 North Union Ave., Tacoma, WA 98406. Additional information, beyond what is shown here, is available from him.
Jehu(5) Chamberlin/lain resided some years in his native place and became a member of the First Church of Colchester, 24 Jan 1742/43, during the pastorate of the Rev. Ephraim LIttle, pastor from 20 Sep 1732 until his death, 5 Jun 1787 (Manual of the First Church of Colchester (1893), pp. 14, 18). Jehu was married there, 7 Jun 1744 and his wife became a member, 12 Oct 1755. Births of their children are not found in Colchester town records, but baptisms of their children are listed in church records. In 1760, he sold to his brother, Ebenezer, land and buildings thereon in Colchester on the road to Marlboro, which he inherited from his father. On 10 Nov 1757, Jehu Chamberlin, his widowed mother and brothers and sisters, deeded land to his brother, William (Colchester Land Records, Liber 7, p. 328).
In 1764, he sold the house in which he was living in Hebron and 40 acres of land (purchased in 1761) on the road from Colchester to Hartford, to his brother Nathaniel Chamberlain of Colchester [dated 16 Jan 1764, Hebron, Conn., Deeds, Bk. 5, p. 35; also dated 23 March 1764 Hebron Deeds, Book 5, p. 47], who sold it nine months later. About this time he seems to have removed to Spencertown, Columbia (then Albany) Co., NY. On 22 May 1767, Nathaniel Chamberlain, of Colchester, brought his brother Jehu, of Hebron, to court for a debt action of more than 20 pounds. The court determined that Jehu's estate was to be attached if debts were not paid within 3 months. Apparently they were not paid and the court ordered his estate to be put up for sale for the benefit of his creditors (Conn. Gazett, 29 May 1767). On 2 Oct. 1767, it was announced that the creditors of the insolvent estate of Jehu Chamberlain, late of Hebron, were to meet on 16 Oct, at John Taintor's inn at Colchester. On 25 May 1768, it was announced that the creditors of Jehu Chamberlain, late of Hebron, now of Spencertown, NY, insolvent debtor, were to meet at the house of Capt. John Chamberlain, innholder of Colchester.
On 3 Mar 1777, Jehu Chamberlain and wife, Sarah, of Spencertown, NY, sold her share in land with a dwelling house and orchard, inherited from her father, sending the deed from Spencertown, NY to Colchester (Colch. Deeds, Liber 9, p. 587). Were the proceeds from this sale used to satisfy his creditors in Connecticut?
Information c1975 supplied by Bee (Beatrice?) Lafever, a descendant of Content Chamberlain, daughter of Gurdon, states that Gurdon's family Bible lists Jehu's death date as 28 Jan 1819, "aged 103 years," with no place of residence given.
