Dora Belle Martin

Dora Martin was born 25 June 1881 in Mifflin Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin. She died 20 November 1974 at Platteville, Wisconsin. She married Ernest Frederick Stephens on 28 June 1905 at the Martin farm about a half mile south of Rewey, Wisconsin. He was born 27 January 1880 at Mifflin Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, and died 17 April 1963 at Platteville, Wisconsin. Both Dora and Ernest are buried in the Kirkpatrick Cemetery at Rewey, Wisconsin.
Stephens was an engineer in southwestern Wisconsin's lead mines, fixing motors, wiring, keeping hoists operative, etc. For many years he walked three and a half miles to work and the same distance home. Anieta, his second daughter, was eight weeks old before her father saw her in the daylight.
Ernest loved music, competing in fiddling contests as a folk fiddler. He took prizes at both Dubuque, Iowa, and Galena, Illinois. He also played the banjo, the accordion and piano. Dora, meanwhile, had special interests in quiltmaking and was also proud of her extraordinary penmanship. Dora was educated through the eight grade and attended Wolf Hollow School, where she had to be accompanied by someone to school each day because of the prevalence of dangerous wolves in the woods. She was a member of the DAR and was also a member of the United Women's Society of the Methodist Church.
There were two (2) children born of the marriage.
