The Prospect News, Doniphan, Missouri, Thursday, June 3, 1982, Page 5, Col. 3: Bertha Ponder Mitchener, a 77-year-old resident of 109 Sycamore, Doniphan, died at her home at 10:55 p.m. Monday, May 31,. She had been ill the past two years. Mrs. Mitchener was born September 2, 1904 in Greenville. She married Bill Ponder on June 26, 1932. He died on October 20, 1963. She later married Leo Mitchener on December 23, 1978, and he preceded her in death on June 4, 1979. Mrs. Mitchener had been a cook at Finch Drugs for 25 years and had lived in Ripley County for most of her life. She was a member of Amity Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Edington, Poplar Bluff, and Bonnie Allen, Columbia; one son, Tom Ponder of Villa Park, Ill.; two step-daughters, Isabelle Grouver and Billie Ponder of Amarillo, Texas; one step-son, D. H. Ponder, also of Amarillo; five sisters, Bessie Hayes, Ollie Gibson, and Mattie McGhee, all of Doniphan, Hattie Ormsby, Fairdealing and Stella Melton, Patterson, La.; one brother, Sheridan Jackson, West Plains; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 3, at Edwards Chapel with the Rev. Bill Miller and the Rev. Charles Hanna officiating. Burial was at Amity Cemetery.
