Newman William Enloe

"Newt" Enloe, age 96, of Lancaster, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Grant Regional Health Center, Lancaster. He was born May 24, 1907, in Platteville, Wis., the son of William T. and Lucy (Waters) Enloe. He grew up in the area, graduating from Platteville High School in 1923 and the then Platteville Teachers College in 1936. He was a longtime member of the Wisconsin National Guard, from 1923 until the 1960s, except for his time on active duty from 1940 until 1945. During the first three months of 1941, he attended a company officers' course at Fort Benning, Ga., where he met his future bride, Ann Blanks, a native of Richmond, Va. During the war he served in New Guinea with the 90th Bomb Group of the Army Air Corps. He also served in England during the last part of the war. Before going to England, he married Ann March 21, 1944 in Richmond. After the war he was assigned to command Company M and later the 3rd Battalion of the 128th Infantry in Platteville. Except for his time on active duty, Newt resided in Lancaster since 1933. After the war, he returned to his job at the Lancaster Post Office. He retired in 1973. He was a longtime active member of Lancaster United Methodist Church. He is survived by his daughter, Shirley Ann (Edward W.) Callan, San Diego, Calif.; two grandsons, Michael Newman (Anna L.) Callan, Carlsbad, Calif., and Daniel Edward (Akiko) Callan, Kyoto, Japan; a great granddaughter, Alisa M. Callan, Kyoto, Japan; his older sister, Mildred Enloe, Whitewater; a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; his parents; four sisters; and three brothers. Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Lancaster, with the Rev. Tom Callahan officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Platteville. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster, and Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at the church.
