Ann WELLS

(Bet 1814 and 1820 - 25 Nov 1897)

1 _MDCL Death Reg. #023336

From analysis of Ontario census data from the years 1851-1891, it appears highly likely that Ann was born between 1814-1820. The census data shows she was born in England. There is no information, to date, which would provide a definate date of birth or maiden name. Since her first son was born in 1844 we may be able to surmize that she wed somewhere between 1835 and 1843. I have located a marriage certificate for the marriage of a Thomas BONE and an Ann WELLS dated September 15, 1840. This marriage took place in St. John the Baptist Church in Croydon, Surrey, England. Ann's father is recorded as William WELLS a labourer. Ann is buried at Union Cemetery in Barrie with her husband in an, as yet, unmarked grave right next to the maintenance building/office. I have a record of the death extract from the Ontario government. The death extract shows an age of 83 putting her year of birth in the area of 1813-1814. It also shows she was born in England but gives no information as to parents names or places of birth. Of course, her age on the document came from a son so it may be in doubt as to accuracy.

Ann was supposed to be a gypsy. Grandfather wrote that she was called Gypsy Bone and was much sought after for cures and potions and such when in Richmond Hill area.
