Charles B. "Doc" Goheen, 94, died at 2:55 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2011, at the Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a period of declining health. Doc was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Greene County, one of seven children born to Charles and Alice B. (Ashford) Goheen.
Doc was a man of solid conviction, and solid devotion. He was a man who cherished life and enjoyed making life more enjoyable for those around him. He was quiet by nature, but his family was the center of his universe, and they were blessed with his love.
A resident of Dow for many years, he and his wife "Att" raised their children there and he remained there for 12 years after her death, only recently moving to Jerseyville in 2009 and staying with his daughter Charlene until his health necessitated his move to the nursing home.
His work career spanned over 50 years at Alton Box Board, where he retired as their maintenance engineer. He was a lifetime member of the Alton Paperworks Union, AFL-CIO, and was a past board member of the Alton Box Board Credit Union.
Doc married the former Athalene "Att" McGiffen on June 15, 1935, in Alton and together they spent 62 years together before her death on Nov. 17, 1997.
Surviving are two daughters and a son in law, Kay and Bill Stassi of Batchtown, and Charlene Morgan of Jerseyville; a son-in-law, James Halford of Godfrey; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ernest "Snooks" Goheen of Godfrey.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved daughter, Dorothy "Tiny" Halford; a son-in-law, Dr. George Morgan; a granddaughter, Stacy Kaylene Oberlander; a great-grandson, Brandon Littleton; two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be from 10 until time of funeral services at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, at the First Assembly of God in Jerseyville, where Rev. Larry Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the First Assembly of God in Jerseyville. Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
