Lester Lee "Hank" Goheen, 85, died at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home after a period of declining health.
He was born July 31, 1923, in Greene County, son of Charles and Alice B. (Ashford) Goheen.
At the age of 9, his family moved to the Newbern area and with the exception of his time with the U.S. Army during World War II, Hank has been a resident of the Dow/Newbern area his entire life.
He was employed as a press operator with Louisiana Dock Company in Alton, retiring in 1988 after 22 years of service.
He was a former member of the American Legion, Boilermakers Union, enjoyed baseball, both playing as a boy and young adult, and watching as age progressed.
The love of his life was his wife, the former Philomena Breitweiser, whom he married on Oct. 6, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo. The two enjoyed nearly 66 years together and were seldom seen apart. Her death occurred on Aug. 21, 2007, and they are once again reunited.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Joann Goheen and William and Linda Goheen, all of Dow, Lester Goheen and his companion, Connie Graham of Brighton; five grandchildren, Tammy Miller of Jerseyville, Robin Goheen of Dow, Tim Goheen of Grafton, Wesley Goheen of Dow and Angela Rawls of Paradise, Texas; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and two brothers, Charles "Doc" Goheen of Dow and Ernest "Snooks" Goheen of Godfrey.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, William Goheen on Dec. 3, 1989; two sisters, Bessie Daniels and Lela Johnson; and one brother, Harry "Dutch" Goheen.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. The Rev. David Brown will officiate.
Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Memorials may be given to the Jersey Community Hospital Dialysis Center.
