Individual Details

LEAVERETT JAMES COREY

(19 May 1853 - 29 Dec 1908)

In the 1861 and 1871 census returns he is identified as "Levert." The 1891 census for New Canaan shows this family: James B. Corey 37; his wife Sarah A. 33; Bliss M. 13; Rosa 11; Zebulon L. 9; Roby G. 7; Noah 4; Sidney 10/12. This must be the family of :Leaverett James" of later knowledge, with "James" as Head, and "Noah" as the child later known as "A. Moody Corey." This is a good example of how muddled census returns can sometimes be.

The family farmed in New Canaan, where Leaverett ran the post office for many years, known as the "Corey Post Office."

His headsone in New Canaan Cemetery reads, "James L. Corey/ died Dec. 29, 1908/ aged 55 yrs." This same stone also records the deaths of "Riley Corey" and "Amy F." who have not been identified. [Corey Book]
