CHARLES HADDEN RYDER
(18 Jun 1866 - 24 Feb 1928)
The following biography was written by Charles' grandson, Dana Ryder.
"Charles Ryder worked in Harvey NB as a telegraph operator for a while. He later came to Portland ME with Hanford Ryder and Norman Sutherland.
"Charles worked on what was known as the Higgin's Farm on Highland Ave in South Portland. In October 1942 his son Cleveland L. Ryder bought a house just about a mile from where his father worked in the early 1890s.
"Charles returned home to Havelock and married Mary Jane Thorne. Mary Jane was a superb cook, and they worked in several lumber camps and on many farms throughout the area.
"Charles was remembered by many because he was always whittling, although he never made anything. A story goes that one winter he was working in the woods, and cut several cord of wood. By the time Spring came, he had them all whittled away!
"Mary Jane died at the age of 44, and left a very young family. Six years later, Charles passed away. He was living in what was known as the "Beehive," an apartment house in Havelock, owned then by Miles Killam.
"Rachel Keith was looking after Charles at the time of his sickness. Both Charles and Mary Jane are buried in the Greenhill Cemetery in Havelock." [Dana Ryder]
From Thorne Book: Charles Ryder worked at various jobs in New Brunswick and Maine. He worked in Harvey, NB as a telegraph operator and then emigrated to Maine. Here he worked as a farm labourer until he returned to Havelock to marry Mary Jane Thorne. She was an excellent cook and, together, they worked in several lumber camps and on farms throughout the eastern Kings and Queens County area.
