ELMER ESSON RYDER

(27 Aug 1908 - 10 Sep 1988)

The following biography of Elmer Ryder, published at the time of his death, is reprinted here verbatim:

"Elmer Esson Ryder, also known to many as Palmer, was born on August 27 1908, the son of Charles Wadden and Mary Jane (Thorne) Ryder on the Back Street in Havelock.

"After he lost his mother at the age of 14, he worked in Earl Saunder's store, in the woods, and also went west on the Harvest Excursions to help his father support the younger ones in the family. At this time they lived in what was known as the Beehive, an apartment house where Sterling Corey's Jr house now stands. At the age of 20 he lost his dad, and a short time later a fire destroyed the Beehive and he lost everything he owned.

"Elmer ran a meat store in Havelock between Alex Cumming's barber shop and the farmer's store for a short time, then moved to Canaan.

"In 1934 he married Phyllis Frances Verrill. They moved in with her uncle and aunt to help do chores before and after work. In March 1935, a daughter, Helen Frances was born. A short time later they moved into a log cabin on the place where Esley Black now lives. The only furniture they had were benches and wooden boxes. They later moved to the Moss place in Salem. In December 1936, a son, Charles Elmer was born. In 1937 Elmer helped a farmer to hay for 50 cents a day for 26 days. When he finished, the farmer didn't have money to pay him, so he took a cow. That fall he walked seven miles to Havelock, loaded railway ties all day and walked home again. After supper he cut his winter wood and carried it to the house on his back. In 1939 he fell and hit his hip on a stone. Later he bought the Dave Kierstead place, but before he could Later get moved, Palmer landed in the hospital.

"In October the family had moved and in November a second son, Esson Miller, was born. Elmer broke his arm in the hospital, the bone came out through the skin in two places. After about 7 years in and out of the hospital and carrying his arm at shoulder height in an aluminum splint he managed to overcome the problem known as osteomyelitis.

"During this time, while out of the hospital, he managed to buy an old pickup truck and started buying deer hides, fur, scrap metal, ale bottles and peddled meat. Later he went into the lumbering and trucking business.

"In 1947, Elmer bought the Jesse Perry place on Canaan Road and decided to raise pigs. In 1950, a second daughter, Patricia Leigh was born.

"Beginning in 1956, he operated a store in Canaan for several years, and after that he ran a store in Killiam's Mills until 1973, when he bought the Havelock Mercantile, which he ran for several years."
