DELILAH BLANCHE RYDER
(6 May 1898 - 1 May 1991)
The following biography was prepared by Dana Ryder: "Around 1918 Blanche came to Portland ME and worked for B.M. Eastman, but got very homesick and returned to Havelock. She then went to Manhurst, just a few miles from Havelock, and worked for Melancton Thorne."
"On 3 Nov 1922 her mother Mary Jane (Thorne) Ryder died, and left a young family to be cared for by Blanche and her father Charles. On 24 Feb 1928 Charles passed away, leaving her children Helen, Elizabeth, and Charles quite young. Her cousin Chesley Ryder asked her to come to Canaan to help look after his sister's children, also orphaned. Lillian Ryder Kierstead had passed away 24 Feb 1932. Gerald, the youngest of her children, was less than two months old. Blanche and Chess raised Walter Ryder and Eileen and Gerald Kierstead on the farm in Canaan."
"I remember as a young lad going there and spending many happy days between Chess and Oscar Ryder's farms, which were next to each other. Later, in the 1950s, Chess sold the farm and bought another in Steeves Settlement. Blanche then bought a home in Killams Mills, where her sister Violet moved in with her, and both spent many happy years working and making quilts. After Violet passed away, Blanche continued making quilts until her eyes got bad."
Blanche died "just 5 days short of her 93rd birthday." The minister in his funeral oration recalled her as "a sweetheart of a person," always "pleasant and gracious and easy going."
