ASA FILMORE RYDER
(14 Jul 1849 - 18 Nov 1924)
On 1 Dec 1890 Asa was granted 100 acres at lot 74-block 18 Springhill.
Dana Ryder relates, "Asa lived up Springhill outside of Havelock in a log cabin with his first family, then moved to Hunter Home, between New Canaan and Cole's Island, on the old Bill Cole place. Then he moved up Forkstream. He later moved to Cherryvale and lived on what we know as the Lawrence Black place, then down river a short distance to the old Elijah Clark place. His last move was to the old George Alward place."
Asa worked in the woods as a cruiser for lumber lots. He was also a guide, as described below.
Asa Ryder is described as a "resident guide" for moose hunters who came from the United States to the New Canaan area each fall. In the nineteenth century, "the Canaan region is one of the best in New Brunswick for moose, and it is to some extent a caribou country as well, as it has never been hunted to such a degree as to injure it." Asa owned "a large hunting camp up Forks Stream," then a "noted locality for moose," a few miles north of New Canaan. Guides at that time were said to be "prepared to put up sportsmen and supply the provisions at a charge of $1.50 a day for each man or he will furnish the outfit and do the cooking for the party, they finding the provisions, for waged of $2.50 a day."
