LAVERSA ELLA COREY

(1 Jul 1882 - 22 Oct 1969)

Judson Corey relates this story: "At noon one day in haying time that summer [1936] a car bearing Maryland plates drove into the Corey farmyard. Ira's sister, Laversa Garns, had motored all the youngest of her seven daughters, her son Edward, the driver, his wife Hazel, and their two sons, David, aged 11, and John, aged 1. Also accompanying them was another sister of Ira's, Ida McBrine. It was very exciting to have relatives we didn't even know we had, come from a big city and show curiosity about everything on the farm. They had a great time visiting relatives in the vicinity. Laversa Corey was probably typical of a number of Knowlesville people who went to the U.S.A. to find work. She told the writer she first went to Houlton. After working there she went to Lewiston, Maine, where her brother, Judson A. Corey and family were living. In Lewiston she met and married Luther Garns on December 14, 1903." There were nine children to this marriage, continued in "Garns Family Roots," compiled by Miriam Garns. [Corey Book]
