BIOGRAPHY: David was introspective, reclusive, a dreamer, and utterl y lacking a sense of humor. He also had a violent temper and was giv en to fits of rage. He despised farming and was determined to break wi th family tradition. He atte nded Lane University where he met and ma rried his wife Ida. After their marria ge, he got a loan from his fat her, took on a partner named Milton Good, and ent ered the mercantile/ grocery business. He left the business in 1888 and the fam ily move d to Abilene, Kansas in 1889. They lived poorly, and returned to Abil e ne, Kansas in March of 1892. David had only $24.15 in his pocket wh en they arr ived back home. BIRTH: He was the oldest surviving son.
