Nickname:<NICK> Nicholas Also Known As:<_AKA> Johann Nicholau s Quirin BIOGRAP HY: Johann Nicolaus Quirin was born December 16, 171 4 in the town of Wolfskirchen, in Alsace, France to Hans Jacob and Mar garet (Quirin) Quirin. In 1728 he received communion. He was a membe r of the Wolfskirchen Lutheran Church. He married Ana Margaretha Baue r sometime around 1738. In 1752 he took his wife and children to th e city of Rotterdam. There, they boarded the English ship Halifax fo r a journey to America. A sister Elizabeth Stroh had immigrated to P ennsylvania in 1749. After a stop at Cowes, England, the Halifax cros sed the Atlantic and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Friday , September 22, 1752. Jo hann signed the oath of allegiance at the st atehouse as "Hans Nickel Quierin." "Quierin" was the spelling his fa mily would use on the majority of documents they were found on from th at date until the 1780's. "Nicholas" was the name he went by throughou t his life. He settled in Rockland Township of Berks County , Penns ylvania, attending the Christ Lutheran Church located in the town of D ryville. It was commonly known as the Mertz Church. He relocated t o Maxitawney Township by 1767, but maintained membership in the church . In 1778, "John Quorden" signed a loyalty oath in Montgomery County , Maryland. On May 8, 1779, Nicholas Query, as he now called himself , purchased a 223-acre farm in Montgomery County, Maryland, known as " Maiden's Bower", "Resurvey of Rich Meadows" and "Montross". He purch ased it from Samuel Boone, cousin of frontiersman Daniel Boone. Samu el Boone ran a firearms factory that supplied weapons to the rebels an d was needed cash badly by 1779. A stream called Muddy Creek bisecte d his farm. On it, Nicholas built a grist and saw mill. He wa s a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick, in Frederi ck County, Maryland. The records of that church show that "Nickola s Queri" took communion with his wife Margareth on May 19, 1782 and o n June 7, 1783. Nicholas wrote his will on Octob er 13, 1788. John N icholas Query died in Montgomery County, Maryland on November 14, 1788 , aged 73. His will was probated December 15, 1788. In it, he made th e following bequests to his children: Sons Daniel and Henry: The whol e of my land, to them and their heirs forever to be divided between th em, share and share alike so as to make it of equal value to each of t hem on their jointly paying the following sums of money to their fiv e sisters at the times mentioned, Viz: Fifteen pounds common currenc y to Mary Ann March within one year after my wife's decease. Twenty-f ive pounds within one year to Christine Schindler after my wife's dece ase. Twenty-five pounds to my other three daughters Catherine March , Elizabeth Humbert and Susannah Tice each like money within one yea r of my wife's decease. BURIAL: The family burial ground o f the Querys is on the above property , which was known as the Haywir e Farm in the late 1900s. A Mr. Harry Steidle o f Germantown, Marylan d then owned it. He sold the farm and the land was turned into a hou sing development. He retained enough of it for his own house and t h e Query Family Cemetery. Of all the Querys buried there, only two s tones remai ned by the 1970s. One has the inscription Died the 24 Nov ember, 1788, John Nic olus Query Was born the 17 of December 1714. Th e other one is apparently for his granddaughter Charlotte (daughter o f Daniel Query). Its inscription reads CQC, Born July, 1801, died Apr il 26, 1826. She married William Counselman on M arch 2, 1826.
