Name Suffix:<NSFX> Jr. BIOGRAPHY: William Haltom Jr. was born ca.1 804 in Montg omery County, North Carolina to Joseph and Mary (Randle ) Haltom. William arrive d in Owen County about 1831 from Montgomery C ounty. William purchased 40 acres in section 17 of Morgan township fro m his brother Joel Haltom on May 30, 1837. William Haltom Jr. was chos en as a Circuit Court grand juror on May 2, 1838. Af ter his wife Eliz abeth Sugg died, he remarried April 28, 1844 to Elizabeth (Luc as) Cof fey, born ca.1804 in North Carolina, widow of Elias Coffey. William p ur chased 40 acres in Jackson township, 1846, farming there in 1850. H e owned 200 acres then. Unable to read or write, William died in Jacks on township, August 1 1, 1859, of a fever, being buried in the Carolin a Cemetery. Elizabeth, his seco nd wife, died on December 19, 1857, be ing buried there as well. In 1860, their children Lockey, Dicy Ann an d Jane were living together in one household while James, Ezekiel, Ple asant and Allen Haltom were living nearby. Marada Lucas was appointe d guardian of the minor children. The property of the father was divid e d up as follows: Ezekiel-2 shares, James-2 shares, Lockey-1.5 shares , Dicey 1.5 shares and 1 share for the minor children, Pleasant, Alle n, Eliza and Mary. Jo el, Isaac and Lucinda Asher had their shares div ided between the others.
