(May 19, 1822 - Jul 28, 1902)

Nickname:<NICK> Harris Cause of Death:<CAUS> cardiac hypertrof ahy BIOGRAPHY: Harrison (Harris) Gaston was an industrious man and wel l thought of in the comm unity. He was a preacher, had a sawmill, mach ine shop and an inn for traders. The machine shop and inn were alread y there when he purchased the Old Hill. He built the house. After mo ving to the Old Hill, he continued to operate the in n and machine sho p. He quarried limestone blocks for the food cellar from the spring . Presently, all that remains of the buildings are these limestone bl ock s. The Old Hill was bought from David Fain. Fain had receive d a sheepskin dee d signed by President John Tyler (1841-1845). Later , Cyrus, the son of Harriso n, owned the Old Hill. Harris gave the sh eepskin deed to Uncle Warren. Warren was researching the family histor y. Harris felt that the deed would be a nice addition to the archives . After Warren's death the sheepskin deed seems to hav e been lost . Land entry records indicate David Fain did purchase E1/2 of NE Se c tion 35, T 11 R4W (80 acres) on May 24, 1841. It can be concluded tha t James Gaston made the purchase and sold it to Harrison, his son. Har ris was a self t aught preacher and helped build the New Union Churc h where he preached. It is said by old timers that heard him, "that h e drew big crowds at tent evangelism meetings with his preaching." RE MEMBRANCES OF WILBUR GASTON, GREAT GRANDSON OF HARRISON GASTON: When w e lived on the Old Hill I took walks with Grandma Gasto n (Ollie Parri sh-Gaston). One of the stories I recall her telling me is that t he o riginal house on the Old Hill had three stories, 14 bedrooms, and a ve ry la rge garret (attic). It burnt in 1883. At the time of the fire H arrison Gaston was building an airplane in the garret. Obituary:
