1860 Smith County, Texas, lists Eli w/children, Isadora, William, Mary & George (s/b Charles Carroll). Evaline Johnson & 5 children are listed next door. Bert w/wife, Mollie and brother J. T. next to Evaline. Caroline Ayres is listed on the 1860 Smith County Mortality Schedule as dying in September 1859. Eli, Evaline, Bert & J. T. are also listed on the 1860 Smith County Slave Schedule. 1870 & 1880 Kaufman County Census lists Eli and Cornelia Ayres and Family. Benson & Isadora Osborne and children, along with her siblings, William, J. T., and Mary are also listed on the 1870 census. The 1870 census also shows Bert and family next door to Eli and Evaline and 4 children next to him. Eli & Caroline Ayres gave B.J. Osborne Power of Attorney for lands in their name in Pontotoc County, MS on Dec. 8, 1858. This was executed by Cary Cobb, Chief Justice of Kaufman County, Texas. Recorded: Deed Book 13, page 407-408, Pontotoc, Mississippi. This indicates that Eli & Caroline were in the Kaufman area in 1858. Eli and Cornelia (2nd wife) are buried in Black Jack Cemetery with other members of the family. Per enumeration his is the earliest date listed in this Cemetery.
ELI AYRES TO THE POPLAR SPRINGS BAPTIST CHURCH
The State of Mississippi, Pontotoc County. I, Eli Ayres has this day donated and bequeath to the Baptist Church Known as the Baptist Church at Poplar Sprints a certain parcel or small tract of land being a part of the S.W. quarter of Section 29 in township 8 of Range No. 4 East in the Chickasaw land District butted and bounded as follows. Beginning at a certain large Poplar on the East boundary line of the before mentioned quarter South of the Spring. Thence West 1c 30 links to a Small Poplar in a hollow. Thence N18c West 6c 75 links to a hickory Grub on the South margin of the big Road with a large Post Oak as a (____?_____) 51 links N.E. thence N 40c E with said Road 4c to the post oak sapling on the line Alexander, Beginning corner Thence South with said line to the beginning being in all by Estimation one acre and forty seven hundreths of an acre (147 A).
