Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2003, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Farming for Oswald Spanier, age 78, who died Friday at the St. Cloud Hospital. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Farming Community Center in Farming. The Catholic Aid Association will pray a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and parish prayers will be at 8:00 p.m. Arrangements with the Wenner Funeral Home in Cold Spring.
Oswald was born in Farming to Mathias and Frances (Schmitz) Spanier. He married Adella Wuertz on May 25, 1948, in St. Margaret's Church in Lake Henry. Oswald lived in Herman, Minn. for 13 years and operated a trucking business. He farmed near Farming for 40 years and has resided in Cold Spring for the past 3 years. Oswald was a member of St. Catherine's Church where he served as Eucharistic minister for 15 years and was a Catholic Aid Association member. Oswald was also a former Albany School Board member. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, fishing, baseball and shooting pool.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Adella; sons, Gordon (Karen Ortlepp) of Cedar Hills, Texas and Gregory (Joann Master) of Champlin; daughters, Beth (Mitch Meyer) of Richmond, Brenda (Monty Hoffstrom) of St. Cloud, and Wendy (Joe Maleska) of Melrose; brothers, Roman (Rose) of St. Joseph and Orville (Jeanette) of Farming; sisters, Delores Klein of St. Cloud, Dorothy (Wally Zumwalde) of Richmond and Viola (Elmer Schwinghammer) of Waite Park; and 7 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gilbert, Robert, Leonard and Arnold Spanier; brothers-in-law, Carl Backes and Richard Klein; and his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Spanier.
