Lucia "Lucy" Bauer

(September, 1846 - July 22, 1913)

Exerpts from the book, "All I Know About the Roots and Shoots of the Joseph and Elizabeth Nett Ahles Family" by Antonette Ahles, OSF, 1992 (distributed to family):

A Sioux uprising occurred on August 18, 1862, and was called the "Indian Massacre". The Bauer and Ahles families went to a stockade (for safety), probably in St. Cloud, for a time. The experience made an indelible impression on Lucy Bauer who was 18 years old at the time. She must have had considerable responsibility for the care of the younger children. It must have been fear, rather than hard work that made the experience so memorable for Lucy. She was to relate it to her children and grandchildren at times when they begged for a story.

Lucy's son Joseph relayed the following story about her. Lucy was carrying a tub of water from the pump to the house for washing closthes when the sheep buck, which had escaped from the pen, butted her from behind causing her to spill the water. She turned, grabbed the buck by the horns and tossed it several feet. The buck did not attack again and Lucy picked up the tub and proceeded to pump another tub full of water.

Obituary of Lucy Ahles in Daily Journal Newspaper (Stearns Co., MN) July 23, 1913:

DEATH CLAIMS EARLY SETTLER; Mrs. Lucy Ahles Passes Away After an Illness of Over Three Months.

Mrs. Ahles, wife of John Ahles of Rockville died yesterday at ther home on the Ahles farm, after having suffered for the past three months from kidney disorders. Mrs. Ahles was very well known in this city, having been a resident of this county for 56 years.

She was the mother of Paul Ahles, county attorney.

Deceased was born in Germany in 1844, in the province and town of Treves, where she lived with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Bauer, until 1857, when she came to America.

The family first settled southeast of this city, close to the town of Rockville, where they lived during the time of the noted Indian outbreaks which occured about the year 1862.

About six years later she was married to John Ahles, who still resides on the farm near Rockville. Mrs. Ahles was a very kind mother and was very prominten int the activities of the Catholic Church at St. George of which the Ahles family is a member.

Besides her husband she leaves 12 children: Mrs. Margaret Bartell of Albertville, Math. Ahles of Lake Henry, John Ahles of Rockville, Paul ties of the St. George Catholic Church, Rockville, Mary Weymann, of Melrose, Jos. Ahles of Bluffton, Christ Ahles of Albany, Anna Krippner of Rockville, Lucy Krippner oif Rockville, Peter Ahles of Hancock and Nick Ahles of Pierz. Obituary of Mrs. Lucy Ahles in the "Nordstern" German language newspaper, Stearns Co., MN (Luxemburg News), 24 July 1913:

On Tuesday evening in her home in Rockville, Mrs. Ahles was released by death from her pain of many year's duration. She suffered a stroke 15 years ago, which disabled her left arm, but otherwise she was able to get about the house, until 3 months ago, at which time, with her other ailments, she also suffered from diabetes, and was ordered to bed.

Her long distress was born with unbelievable courage, she was resigned to God's holy will, and she dedicated her time of pain to a careful preparation for the difficult to eternity.

The deceased was born in 1844 in Auel, Gov. Adm. District of Trier, Germany from where she came to this country with her parents Gotthard and Margaretha (Bauer) in 1857.

The family settled in the southeast part of Rockville Township, and the deceased stayed there in support of her parents until her marriage, which took place in 1868 with John Ahles.

They then moved from their parents homeplace to a property three miles away where she remained until closing her eyes to eternal slumber. Whith her passes a loyal wife, a loving mother, a woman who always, until her final illness was a support for her children, and a deidcated housewife who cheerfully and with zest fulfilled all her obligations, and who was for her husband, not only a loyal life companion, but also a good helpmate, willing to share with him the joys and pains of married life, and, as a pioneer in Stearns County, to withstand the dangers of the Indian uprising, who had to flee to St. Cloud with the rest and endure many hardships and unpleasant messes that pioneer life entailed.

To her charges, the departed was a loving supporter in good days and bad, and the well-being of her family was her happiness and life-goal, which she ever fulfilled in a superior fashion. And this though was for her, in her hour of pain, a great consolation that she had led the children entrusted to her by God to the path of rightiousness, and this goal had been achieved.

Along with the grieving husband, John Ahles, the surviving children are: Mrs. Margaretha Barthel from Albertville, MN; Mathias Ahles, from Lake Henry; Joan and Gotthard Ahles; who are still at home; Paul Ahles of St. Cloud; Mrs. Maria Weymann of Melrose; Joseph from Bluffton; Christ Ahles of Albany; Mrs. Anna Krippner and Mrs. Luzia Krippner of Rockville; Peter Ahles of Hancock; and Nik Ahles from Pierz.

The burial took place on Fri. morning in the local parish cemetery after a requiem mass in St. Wendelin's Church in St. Augusta, held by Rev. Pastor H. Gundermann. May good mother Ahles enjoy now heavenly bliss after her many years of pain. To the survivors we hereby extend our innermost condolences.
