Gotthard Bauer

(August 5, 1807 - August 3, 1873)

Mitchell (author of "History of Stearns County Minnesota") states that there were 14 children and a Bauer cousin has found evidence of two children who died in Germany, Hubertus, born in 1834 and Anna Maria in 1837. They made wonderful time reaching St. Cloud, MN from New York by June 29, 1857, considering the modes of travel available. On that date Gothart Bauer signed the "Declaration of Intentions" in the "Territory of Minnesota, County of Stearns" by which he renounced allegiance to all foreign potentates.

Exerpts from the book, "All I Know About the Roots and Shoots of the Joseph and Elizabeth Nett Ahles Family" by Antonette Ahles, OSF, 1992 (distributed to family):

The Bauer family with its young children had reason to become involved with education soon after their arrival. Winchell (History of the Upper Mississippi Valley, Minnesota Historical Society, 1881) states, "School was kept in what is now (1881) district number ten in the house of G. Bauer, soon after the settlement (Rockville) was made, but a log school house was built...in 1860. Along with schools, the settlers were eager to have churches. In 1859, a group of neighbors decided to build a church at a point called Luxemburg, about 5 miles fromt he Ahles and Bauer farms. This tiny church became known as St. Wendel's.

The family of Gothart and Margaretta Bauer sailed from Antwerp, Belgium via the vessel, Angela Bremen, arriving in New York on June 11, 1857. The traveled with 12 children. Ships Log:
