Services will be 11 a.m. Thurs., Jan. 2 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose for Clarence Berscheid, who died Sun. at the Melrose Area Hospital. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call Wed. from 4 - 9 p.m. and Thurs. from 8 - 10:30 a.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 8 p.m. Wed. at the funeral home.
Clarence Berscheid was born in Birchdale Township, Todd County, MN to Nick and Mary Ann (Pluth) Berscheid. He was united in marriage to Viola Ostendorf on Oct. 6, 1953 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. The couple farmed in the Grey Eagle area, retiring in 1990. Clarence also worked at Kraft Foods until retiring in 1985. After retirement, he worked part time at Jubilee Foods carrying out groceries. In the early years, he taught the value of a good book. He enjoyed playing board games, cards and spending time with his grandchildren. In his spare time Clarence did carpentry work and helped with the work on his daughter's farm. Clarence was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Berscheid of Melrose; children, Betty Kracht of Columbia Heights, Eileen Keniston (Roger) of Brooklyn Park, Bernadette Wielenberg (Vince) of Grey Eagle, Lois Brunn (Greg) of Rochester, Bonnie Holthaus (Jeff) of Watkins, Beverly VanHavermaet (Jerry) of Sauk Centre, Joyce Beuning (Ken) of Andover; 18 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Berscheid (Rosie) of Sauk Centre and sister, Dorothy Jacobs of Grey Eagle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, John Kracht; granddaughter, Sarah Kracht; brothers, Arnold, Julian, Donald and sister, Lorene Bitz.
