- Mom and Dad met on a blind double date, I don't know who the other couple was. Dad was still in high school and Mom had been out at least 2 years. Dad was held back in the first grade twice because he didn't learn anything. He was tiny and frail and became the teacher's pet, so all he had to do was look cute and sing to get by. I heard that my grandmother got disgusted with this the second time he was held back and went to the teacher and chewed her out.
They eloped to New Castle to get married in March of 1939. Because Dad was still a Senior in high school they kept it secret and didn't live together until he graduated in June. You may already know all this but if so it doesn't hurt to repeat it.
Your mother didn't like my Dad at first because when he was invited to dinner at the Haas home she didn't get her usual second helpings because Grandma made just enough to go around. [5]
