Magic City's Latest Musical OrganizationPhoto of band
Caption:
Warner Gear Band.
The Warner Gear Band, the latest musical organization in Muncie, starts off with the promise of becoming one of the best concert bands in the city. Among its members are band men who have had lots of experience. The organization first attracted attention at the Y.M.C.A. by playing at the Factory Basketball League games. It made its first public appearance by heading the parade at the district Red Men's meeting and later took an active part in the Y.W.C.A. campaign. Gus Doerman is leader and Clifford Babb is the business manager. The handsome uniforms were furnished by the Warner Gear Company. The members of the band, reading from left to right, are as follows: Back row, Jess Chambers, tuba; Martin Carey, baritone; Lawrence Butler, tuba. Middle row, Irvin Heeter, bass drum; Arthur Hillard, trombone; Earl Longnecker, trombone; Thurman Hensley, alto; Clifford Babb, snare drum. First row, Raymond Hoyt, cornet; Charles Hollopeter, cornet; Frank Tilton, cornet; Clifford St. John, cornet; Gus Doerman, clarinet and director; Claude Moore, clarinet; August Haas, clarinet; William Neighbors, clarinet; Norwood Carey, mascot (seated on floor), and John Rinard, trombone. Research
I don't know that August was a member of the band, but it is possible.Blue Jacket Band - John Phillip Sousa
1. Lt. Sousa essentially volunteered his services, donating all but one dollar of his annual salary to the Sailors' and Marines' Relief Fund. Though he was permitted to fulfill his previously booked responsibilities as conductor of his own Sousa Band, he spent most of his time fulfilling his Navy responsibilities, organizing some 1,500 musicians into regimental and fleet bands and an elite 350-member "Bluejacket Band," which went on tours to promote recruitment in the armed forces and to raise money for Liberty Bonds and the Red Cross. Having attended a performance of the Bluejacket Band, President Wilson may have spoken for the nation when he declared it "the greatest demonstration of American spirit that is possible to conceive and certainly . . . the greatest band in the world."Sousa's efforts raised about twenty-one million dollars.
Sousa and the Bluejacket Band were in Toronto, Canada, assisting the Canadian government with its Victory Loan campaign, when the Armistice was announced on November 11, 1918. "Never was there such a night!" Sousa recalled. "Not a soul in the city slept." For Sousa the post-war euphoria was only slightly dampened by a bout with the Spanish Flu and an abscess in his right ear; "but," as he rejoiced, "what were pains and pangs and abscesses to the frantic delight of knowing the war was over?"

Travel (Fam)
August, Mabel and probably Barbara spent time in the Traverse City, Michigan areaIllness
This illness was a result of his many years working in the glass factory at Ball Brothers in Muncie, Indiana. The silica dust, I gather from the various letters and diary written in June and July of 1943, was the cause of his problems. He also smoked cigarettes and a pipe as well.August mentioned getting treatments at the sanitarium. I am thinking that he was probably referring to the Hillsview Sanitarium which is described on the web page.

Stories
Email from ID0452, 4 Nov 2014:While looking at the photo of John Haas and his daughter in their front yard on Mock Ave. from the 1920's a reminiscence came to me about the times we would drive down Mock Ave. to visit our grandparents. The barn on the West side of the street with the picture of the horse fascinated me, as well as the grotto-like house just North of it. Then, the grocery store with its little icehouse in the front that I remember being in, followed by the seemingly grandiose structure of the Stevenson School. Turning onto 17th St, where there were a couple houses then series of vacant lots on the same side of the street as the Haas house. The Hubbard's newly built Dutch Colonial style house on the North side looked so clean and neat. No trees, no landscaping at that time.
The point is that at first this drive was a very joyous occasion, i believe because I was anticipating a visit my with grandfather. That changed after he died. The drive then became one of dread and unhappiness. Even at that age, I recollect that dealing with Grandma and Barbara was traumatic.
The only bright spot was your mother. I don't know if she was still living there, but at least she was still around a lot. She was always so loving and positive.
Even at that young age I knew my life was headed in a different direction because of our grandfather's death. I firmly believe all of his grandchildren would have been significantly affected by him had he not died so early in his life. Unfortunately, we'll never know.
Mike
==================================
Email, 10 March 2018:
When Grandpa came home for the last time I was there with Mother when they brought him in on what must have been a gurney. I was very happy to see him and tried to get close to him. Grandma Haas scolded me and angrily pulled me back from him. He then said something to the effect that it was alright and there was some kind of physical contact between us and maybe a few words before they rolled him into the bedroom. I never saw him again. My mother was sobbing the whole time and was helpless. I'm sure she knew it was the end. I was unaware that he was dying and never came to grips with it until months later. I was two years old. I remember telling my buddy Herbie Dudley in the back yard on Gharkey St. that Fall that my grandfather died of old age. He did look old because of his illness, far older than my grandfather Lucas at the time. Bittersweet memory.
I also remember he had an attic workshop.
Stories
Written in response to an email from ID0452, 6 Nov 2014:Thanks for the email and your thoughts concerning Grandpa Haas.
I, too, wonder at the differences in our lives if this man had lived. Personally, I have thought of him often. Since he was not present he seemed to be a mythical character that was bigger than life. Everyone described him as the kindest of men, very easy going and extremely talented.
Several of my interests have come from knowing that grandpa also enjoyed these avocations. Woodworking, Photography (especially the darkroom part) and music.
Woodworking: I never built fine furniture or anything but I did make some rather nice pieces in the area that I enjoyed (Toys and doll furniture) but always in the back of my mind I was thinking "What would Grandpa think of this?"
Photography: I remember someone saying when I was young that Grandma and Grandpa would take pictures with their box camera and then develop the negatives in the attic and make the prints. I was fascinated and I really didn't know what it was all about. When I got old enough and was able to give it a try I was hooked and had a darkroom of some sort until the early 1990s. I was always fascinated by the images coming up on the paper in the chemicals and wondered if Grandpa had the same feeling when he was doing this. I still take lots of pictures but of course in the world I no longer need a darkroom. I feel proud to have the box camera he used and also some of the negatives and prints that he and Grandma had made.
Music. I have never actually played any instrument - I tried my guitar a few times but just don't seem to have whatever it takes. I do remember when in elementary school wanting to play in the band and wanting to play the clarinet because that was what Grandpa had played but for whatever reason it never happened. Also, one of my favorite musicians has always been Benny Goodman because of Grandpa. So, instead of being a musician I satisfy myself being a listener of fine music.
The only major avocations that I have pursued that did not come from Grandpa were radios and Research. The love of radios and communication came from my Uncle Myron. The research and organization came from being of German descent which of course DID come through Grandpa.
I never knew Grandpa but have always felt his presence in my life and had always wished that he had been around to be a part of my life. But in a way he has been a part of my life as it turns out.
Thanks again for your thoughts concerning a wonderful human being.
