"When Gibson's opened the Ice skating rink in 1938, Marjorie, Olive, Barbara & I all skated - Barbara wasn't very old but did skate. [the following is circled] Marjorie & I skated all the time. We met lots of friends. I eventually married Walter, one that I met at Gibson's. (After Ice Skating [end of circle]. Before roller skating we had ice skating at Gibson's. I learned to skate real well & did enjoy it. Mother & Daddy & Barbara skated too. Mother fell & broke her arm skating. Marjorie & I roller skated at the armory - Selma, Gaston - Yorktown (Kahler's) & Gibson's. We ice skated at Gibson's.We also rode our bicycles on long Sunday rides. Our father wouldn't get us a bicycle - we had to wait till we could afford one ourselves - he said he didn't want to be responsible if we got hurt on it. The traffic was too bad he thought. I do respect him for that. You have to be real alert & careful in traffic. I remember Marjorie got her bike at Goodyear in Muncie. I bought mine at Western Auto, it was a green bicycle. Marjorie's was blue & white. I sold mine when I was going to Arizona to be with Walter in the service") - (Note: Norma and her sisters spent a lot of time at the Gibson's Roller Rink both roller skating and ice skating. Norma met her future husband, Walter, at Gibson's.)

Notes:
I remember that I messed with the telephone at this house and the repairman had to come out to repair it - I had unscrewed the mouthpiece and turned the disk inside upside down or something.
I remember that we had an outhouse and it was a 2-holer - I also recall there was an apple orchard to the east of the house and the neighbors to the east were named Rector and they had 2 older boys, one of which took me to my first grade class on my first day of school.
A Railroad track ran north and south to the west of the house. A single train would go north in the morning and come back south in the afternoon every day. The cars were pulled by a single coal-fired steam engine. I liked to watch the train go by every day. On several occasions hobos would jump off the train near our house because it began slowing down for Eaton at that point. They would oftentimes come to the house to see if they could do some work for some food. Usually Mom would just give them something to eat and not require them to do anything for us. They were polite and thankful for whatever they received and went on their way.
We got out first television at his house. I can remember how great I thought it was. It was black and white and the picture was very fuzzy most of the time - Dad had to constantly go outside to adjust the antenna which was on a pole outside the house - by rotating the antenna the picture would get better or worse depending on the time of day, weather, etc.
My sister Janet was born while we were living at this house
I also remember that my dog Duke was born here. We had some cows in the barn and Dad had made stalls and a trench for the cows to use. Dad had an old Ford Truck and one day after he had left for work I was playing in it and somehow got it started and ran it into the foundation of the barn - I don't know if I caused any damage or not. I recall that on the north end of the property there was a trash pile that was in a gully or something.

110-acre farm
I remember a lot about this residence. It was a farm of 110 acres and had a woods in the northwest corner of the property. The farm was on both sides of the gravel road. The house was on the south side along with an outbuilding and a chicken house with a fenced area for the chickens, etc. There was also a metal grain shed in the fenced enclosure. The property was all in Delaware County. The northern boundary was on the Delaware/ Blackford County line.
The house was a 2-story with a front porch. There was a well pit on the east side of the house where the well and water pump was located. It had a lid over it that covered the pit which seemed deep to me as a child. We move there in 1952 when I was about 8 years old. Downstairs in the house was the kitchen and living room and 1 bedroom - there was a room behind the kitchen. I remember there being these huge old dark cabinets in the kitchen - There was not a bathroom in the house - we had a pitcher pump and later a sink with a faucet. Later Dad put in a bathroom but before that we had to use the outhouse located on the south side of the house. We had to move it and clean out the pit every so often - what a smelly awful job.
Before the bathroom baths were taken on Sunday nights in a big old galvanized tub that was placed on the floor of the kitchen floor in front of the wood stove. all of us kids would get to use the same water for our baths. It sure was nice when we got the bathroom and had a shower and an inside toilet!
The barn, a long garage and a couple of other outbuildings were on the north side of the road. The barn had a hayloft and was usually full of bales of hay. The long garage building was full of hog pens where the hogs lived and where in the winter the baby pigs were born. I well remember having to spend the nights out there when they were being born and haveing to use a pitch fork or something to move the little pigs out of the way so the mother hog would not roll over on them and smash them - As I recall each time a little pig was born she would roll over before having the next one. There were heat lamps over each stall for the little pigs but no warmth for us in the building.
We had a pony named Billy who was not very nice - He liked to kick. He was a pretty pony and we had a fancy saddle and bridle for him. We also had other horses - Phil had a horse named Trigger and mine was a white male horse that I named Sliver - a play on the word Silver. The Lone Ranger TV series was popular at that time and a favorite of mine. Since the Lone Ranger's horse was a white stallion named Silver I wanted my white horse to be special so I named him Sliver. He and Trigger (Named after Roy Rogers' horse) had been from the west. To be quite honest, I was afraid of the horses - they were so big and liked to buck and throw us off of them - it is a miracle that one of us did not get killed from being thrown from these horses. I remember it took a long time before I was actually able to ride Sliver - He wanted to take off immediately when you placed your foot in the stirrup and not waiting until you were actually in the saddle.
We had a couple of other horses as well. I remember having a smaller horse and Dad sold him to a neighbor who lived straight north of us. Dad wanted us kids to ride him so he would be used to the saddle. We rode it to the end of the road to the east and back and then into the barn to have some hay as a prize. When the man came to pick up the horse he was going to ride it home. He took off and was soon back when the horse turned around at the end of the road and ran back to the barn and almost decapitated the man when it went into small barn door. He had to lead the horse to his house. This was funny but probably to the new owner.
The heat for the house, beside the wood stove in the kitchen, was from an oil heater located in the living room. It was warm in the living room but the farther away you got the colder it got. The upstairs had not heat except for what little got up there from a vent in the floor above the oil stove. In the winter we would bundle up and have lots of heavy covers - we would heat bricks on the wood stove and wrap them in towels or blankets or something and put them under the covers at the foot of the bed. It was terribly cold up there - when it got really cold we would come downstairs and sleep on the floor of the living room. That was warmer but not very comfortable. The boys bedroom was on the west side of the upstairs and I can remember, when it snowed, that snow would blow in around the window.
We were living here when I met a boy who lived around Albany I believe. He was the son of a man who worked with Dad at the factory. Mom and Dad would go visit and I would go along and play with the boy. He died of appendicitis and I remember going to the funeral home with my parents - I was terrified and could not sleep for a long time - I had bad dreams and was afraid of dying. It was many years before I got over the fear of dying and attaching morbidity to death.
The woods on the property was small, probably only 5 or 10 acres but I thought it was great and loved to roam around in it when I could.
I did not like farm work. I helped milk the cows, clean the manure in the barn, feed the animals, etc. We milked about 20 or so head of cattle and had several hogs at all times. We also had some chickens and of course the horses. It seemed like one of the animals were getting out of the fence areas all the time and we would have to chase them down and herd them back into the fence. Sometimes this was quite a chore. I didn't mind driving the tractor plowing, discing, etc. Other than that I didn't much care for the farm life.
My grandfather Robbins' farm adjoined ours on the west - he had about 200 acres of land which included a large woods with a creek that ran through it. I loved to ride or walk through that woods because it had hills, water and lots of neat trees. I remember camping on the north side of the property in the woods one time with some other boys. We thought it would be cool to drink out of the creek, but we got sick from it. Turned out it was not actually a creek but a drainage ditch so the water was less than pure like the mountain streams on the cowboy shows popular at the time on TV. The camping was still fun though. There was a windmill on the north side of the property as well. Part of this property was in Delaware County and the rest in Blackford County. Dad farmed his land as well all of Grandpa's land. Dad had all the big equipment so he did the baling, combining, corn gathering, etc for all of the family.
When hay baling time came I would usually end up in the hay mow in the barn - of course this was done in the middle of summer when it was hot as Hades already and then to be couped up in the hay mow made it even worse. They would send the bales up an elevator and they would drop off in the mow. Me and sometimes one of the other boys would have to carry the bales away and stack them in the mow in neat rows and stacks.
My Uncle Milton Robbins and his family lived across the road from my Grandfather and my Uncle Paul and Aunt Mary lived to the northwest of Grandpa and their farm (all in Blackford County) adjoined that of Grandpa.
The farm was sold in 1958 and the farm sale was held on 7 Nov 1958.

- Had to be out of the hotel by noon
- after their luggage had been picked up they spent time walking around town
- The tour company transported them to the airport
- The flight left Hawaii at 430 pm
- They flew over San Francisco and Norma remembered seeing a large Christmas Tree on top of a building
- The arrived at O'Hare Airport in Chicago at 5 am
- They took a 35 minute flight from Chicago to Indianapolis
The trip had cost them less than $2000.00 including all expenses - Norma was quite pleased at the cost
Notes:
1. Norma and her sisters, Olive and Marjorie, created these cassette tapes talking about their activities
and what was going on in their lives. They used these tapes in addition to frequent letters and occasional phone calls
as another way to keep in touch. Olive and Marjorie both lived in the San Francisco area. They had both been the Navy
during WW2 and stayed there after the war.
2. Mabel and Charlie Gilliatte accompanied them on the tour and Norma mentioned them on this tape several times.
Charlie and Walter had worked together at Chevrolet Muncie and were best of friends.

Notes: Ceiling Collapse 13 July 2003 - caused by leak from air conditioner unit in the attic - unit had been improperly installed. The insulation had absorbed the water over time and finally the accumulated weight collapsed the ceiling. Fortunately, Norma had just walked past the area and nobody got injured. The repairs were done by Davis Construction in Muncie at a cost of $5800.00. They replaced the entire ceiling in the living room and hall. They also repaired the ceiling and walls in the dining room which sustained moisture damage. The repairs were completed in the middle of August 2003Illness
The surgery was performed at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Delaware Co, Indiana at 7am. Norma stayed at the hospital overnight and was released about 2pm on 14 Aug 2003. She was in room 7105-2.Illness

Illness
Infection got into her body cavity via the dialysis exchange process and caused Peritonitis. She was hospitalized at Ball Memorial Hospital [Muncie, Delaware Co, Indiana] from Wednesday 3 March 2004 until she was released Sunday morning 7 March 2004. Dad and Janet took her to the Emergency Room. Walt Jr was in the Surgery waiting room waiting on Kelly's surgery for a Kidney stone when he received a call from sister Janet informing him they had taken Norma to the ER. Walt Jr shuffled between the ER and Kelly's room in the hospital all that day and got home about 7 that night after both were settled and the danger for both was overResidence (family)

I saw this old houseWith weathered walls of grey,
My Gandparents house,
Was just this way,
Many a Happy day.
In that old house,
With love and happiness,
The horse and buggy,
The old straw mattress on a high metal bed.
Grapes on the arbor,
Friends across the fence,
I often have dreams of the happy days there.
My grandparents lived in Hartford City Indiana, in a little grey house. My three
sisters and I would spend our summers there. We had many friends and a loving
Grandmother & Grandfather.
My Grandmother would start out for the little corner store-it would be noon before
we got back with our breakfast cereal. She knew everyone and would stop and
talk to all of them. We thought we would starve.
We would go to town in the horse & buggy every Saturday night. In those days
Hartford City, like all other towns, was really bustling with people.
I sure miss those Good Old Days.
One night we were getting ready to go to town- Grandpa was working with his
horse-l did something (l don't remember what now) and the horse bit him. He
never did know what happened, probably a good thing too.
We are grandparents now, and enjoy all our grandchildren & great
grandchildren.
No horse & buggy, back fence or straw mattress but lots of other memories for
them. We're in our 80's now and so many changes have been made-love and good
memories still remain with me.
