Children (Family)
Luther Cook, born Apr 1850, IndianaMy reasons for the children assigned to the various mothers:
1. I first found the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 US Census records
2. I knew that Levi and Martha were married in 1849 but according to the 1850 census there were 4 children who had been born prior to that census so I had to assume that there had been a previous wife
3. Since Martha died in 1852 the only child that could have belonged to Martha was Luther born Apr 1850
4. In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census a Mary J. appeared as the wife. I found the marriage record for Levi and Mary Jane White
5. The children born after 1852 must belong to Mary Jane.
6. I finally found the marriage record for Levi and Phebe Jackson in 1836
Biography
Martha did all she could to help in the home until she was married to Levi H. Cook as his second wife. The new duties fell upon her, that of helping to train children who had lost their mother, and from the testimony of one of the boys after he had grown old she surely did her part. "We were glad, he says, When she rode up to our house to be our mother. But in a short time, her life came to an end. [1][1] Family Tree of Robert and Lydia Tomlinson, Bk2964
