Occupation
"...having taught school here [Hamilton County] for twenty years, ..." [1]"Teacher" [2]
Jane T. Doan was for twenty years a teacher in the public school beginning the work in 1860 when personal fitness and individual effort stood in place of professional training of today. The incident of her first examination for teachers license is of peculiar interest. She met the county examiner at the railroad station. The examination was entirely oral work. He asked her a few questions on general educational topics, then he asked her to spell the word right in all its different forms of spelling each form to indicate its respective meaning. In reading she was required to read one paragraph. The test in grammar was to parse one or two words from the sentence "I John, saw the Holy ciity, the new Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven," and when she said that the word "John" was in the same case as "I" by opposition, the examiner assured her that he was convinced of her knowledge of grammar and going to his office he gave her the highest grade license obtainable at that time. Her first school was at Chester near her home, the location of the cemetery where her body will be laid to rest today, beside those of many friends long gone, amid the scenes of her most active strength in life. [3]
Jane, born in 1835, the last one of the children that was born in Hendricks County, qualified for teaching school. Her first license was given in 1860. The examination was oral work. She found the county superintendent at the railroad station; she went in and introduced herself, and he asked what she wanted. She told him that she wanted license to teach school. Then he proceeded to ask her a few questions on different subjects, then asked her to spell the word "right" in all its forms. The next was to read one paragraph. The grammar question was to parse one or two words in the sentence: " I, John saw the Holy city, the New Jerusalem, coming down form God out of Heaven." And when she said that "Joh" was in the same case as "I" by apposition, the superintendent said that was enough, and told her that when she said that "John" was in the same case as "I" by apposition, he knew that she knew grammar. He then went up to his office in town and gave her a first class license. Her first school was at Chester in 1860. Many of her nephews and nieces received a part of their education under her teaching . She continued in that work for twenty years or more. In the year 1882 she was married to Amos Doan in Chester Meeting House, by the Friends' Ceremony. [4]
