Obituary
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mr. Phillip "Phil" Merrithew, 74, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at his home one day short of his 56th wedding anniversary. Phil passed away with his wife, Mary Ellen Moran Merrithew; and an ever protective dog named Skidoe, at his side. Phil was born March 1, 1932, in Bangor, the son of the late Lebaron and Helen Shea Merrithew. He was a 1950 graduate of Bangor High School and attended both the University of Maine and the University of Miami. Phil served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 to 1954 and was awarded a Purple Heart for service in the Korean War. He was a retiree of Catawba County, N.C., where he served as director of substance abuse. Phil was an enthusiastic golfer for more than 50 years, with one of his great treasures; his one and only hole-in-one made Sept. 8, 1995. Phil was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws, John and Leola Sullivan Moran; one sister, Francis Kirkpatrick; and one daughter-in-law, Lynda Stamey Merrithew. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Moran Merrithew of the home; sons, John Moran Merrithew and his wife, Kathi, of Bangor, Jeffery Michael Merrithew of Manchor, N.H., Barry Phillip Merrithew and his wife, Carol, of Milwaukee, Wis., Dean Edward Merrithew of Winston-Salem, N.C., Daniel William Merrithew of St. Mary, Fla., and Shawn Patrick Merrithew of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and one daughter, Laurie Ellen Merrithew Denton of Hickory, N.C. In addition, Phil is survived by nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Phil requested no memorial service or funeral. A private burial at see will take place off the coast of Maine at a later date. The Merrithew family is forever indebted to all the caring folks at Hospice of Winston-Salem for their wonderful care in Phil's last illness. Please no flowers, instead kindly make a donation in Phil's name to the Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 1010 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
