On 3 September 1942, John was inducted into the U.S. Army, spending his first year training as a radio operator. From 13 November 1943 until 26 November 1945 he was stationed at Maison Blanche, the airfield for Algiers, Algeria, serving as radio and teletype operator. GREENVILLE - John F. Dyer, 87, died Oct. 15, 2006, at C. A. Dean Hospital, Greenville, He was born Sept. 1, 1919, son of John T. and Rose M. (Wakely) Dyer, residents of Township AR 13, Kokadjo. Growing up, he received his education at St. Joseph's Academy, Wellesley Hills, Mass., Hebron Academy, Hebron and College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass. Returning to Kokadjo, he worked as a guide, trapper, and as a warden for the Maine Forestry Service. He was inducted into military service Sept. 3, 1942. The next year was spent training in the U.S. Army Air Force as a radio operator. He spent Nov. 13, 1943, until Nov. 26, 1945, at the air base at Maison Blanche, the airfield for Algiers, Algeria, North Africa, as a radio operator and teletype operator. He returned to the United States and was discharged from service with the rank of sergeant Dec. 2, 1945. He resumed his seasonal employment as guide, fire warden and worked in the lumber camps for Hollingsworth and Whitney, later Scott Paper, and for independent operators in the lumbering field as clerk and scaler. After this, he worked as office manager for Squaw Mountain Corp. during the construction of the chair lift, chair lift lodge and hotel for a period of eight years. Employed by C. A. Dean Hospital and Nursing Home, he worked as business manager for two years, and then became the hospital's administrator, holding the position until retirement in 1981. After retirement, he served as treasurer and as clerk/treasurer for the Town of Beaver Cove. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 42 years, Edna Mountain Dyer. Survivors include a granddaughter, Cynthia Walker Anderson of Greenville; two great-grandsons, Ryan Anderson of Portland and Scott Anderson; a great-great-grandson, Ethan Anderson, both of Salt Lake City, Utah; also nieces and nephews. At his request there will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Greenville, with the Rev. Fr. Richard Malo officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Greenville Cemetery.Endnotes
