Willie F. McCarter, 79, well known Grayson county citizen, died at his home near Elk Creek about noon Friday, April 11. He had been in declining health for some time.

Mr. McCarter, who had for many years been a successful farmer and livestock producer, was a son of the late Van Buren McCarter and wife Mrs. Amanda Cornett McCarter, and was born near the place where he had resided for many years.

Surviving are two sons, Kyle McCarter, of the home and Summitt McCarter, Detroit, Mich.; one brother, S. M. McCarter, Elk Creek, and a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His wife, Mrs. Laura Vaught McCarter preceded him in death March 17, 1951. Two sons, Rhea and Bryan, also preceded their father in death, as did two sisters, Mrs. G. K. Fielder and Mrs E. H. Warrick.

Dr. V. B. McCarter and Bill McCarter, both Galax citizens are among surviving grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Easter Sunday, at 2 p.m. at Jerusalem Methodist church, by Rev. G. E. Pagans, pastor of the Spring Valley circuit who read appropriate scripture and offered a prayer, and Rev. G. C. Rhudy, who gave an appropriate talk concerning the Christian life of the deceased. Mrs. S. G. Rhudy read an obituary sketch.

The choir sang "Abide With Me, " "Home of the Soul" and "In the Land Where We'll Never Grow Old."

Active pallbearers were Price Burris, Claude Hall, Gene Warrick, Grover Rhudy, Cecil Has, and Calvert Rhudy.

Honorary pallbearers, who were close friends of the family, carried the many beautiful floral designs.

Interment, under direction of Vaughan-Guynn, Galax, followed in the church cemetery.
