Individual Details
Nicholas SNOW
(1601 - 15 Nov 1676)
He may have been the Nicholas baptized 25 January 1599 at St. Leonard's Shoreditch, London, England, son of Nicholas Snow of Hoxton, Middlesex, England. The parish of St. Leonard's adjoins St. Mary's Whitechapel, where Stephen Hopkins, father of Constance, married his second wife.
Like his father-in-law Stephen Hopkins, it appears that Nicholas was counted among the "Strangers" or those who came to America primarily for business reasons. Those who came to Plymouth seeking religious freedom were know as the "Saints."
Nicholas appears on the 1633 list of freeman and served as a highway surveyor, a grand juror, and a purchaser and, as such, enjoyed various land grants.
On January 5, 1634, his indentured servant, Twyford West, complained to Edward Winslow that he disliked being with Snow and voluntarily increased his indenture from six to seven years in consideration of Winslow acquiring his indenture.
On December 1, 1640, Nicholas was one of several highway surveyors presented for not mending the highways. He was also one of the Plymouth residents who moved to Nauset in the 1640s where he was a surveyor, deputy, tax collector, constable, and selectman. In 1664 he was among those allowed to bring liquors into Eastham.
The will of Nicholas Snow of Eastham, dated 14 November 1676 and proved 5 March 1676, left livestock and household goods to wife "Constant" for life use and then to sons Jabez, and devised various parcels of land to sons Mark, Joseph, Steven, John, and Jabez. The description of land near the testator's house mentioned "son Thomas Paine" as an abutting owner. Nicholas also gave, after the death of his wife, the sum of ten shillings "to the Church of Eastham for the furniture of the Table of the Lord, with pewter or other Necessaries." He named Deacon Samuel Freeman and John May as executors. Letters of administration were granted to Constance, Mark and John Snow on 6 March 1676. A lengthy inventory, including many cooper's and carpenter's tools, was sworn to by widow Constant on 22 March 1676.
Governor Bradford wrote between 6 March and 3 April 1651 that "Constanta is also maried, and hath 12 children all of them living, and one of them married."
