Anna Coleman

We know that Jacob Cox was married to a person named Anna in the 1750's, and he may have been married to a person named Mary in 1769. Descendants of Jacob also have autosomal DNA evidence that appears to link them to descendants of Thomas Coleman (1688-1781) and Elizabeth Brown. Thomas and Elizabeth, according to Coleman researchers, had daughters named Anna and Mary among their children, though nothing further has been known about these two girls. Additionally, Jacobs' son, Samuel, named a daughter Sarah Ryland Cox, and Anna and Mary had a sister named Sarah who married a man with the surname Ryland, giving her the new name of Sarah Ryland. There are additional hints in the naming patterns, including the fact that Jacob named one of his sons, Thomas. Jacob's son, again Samuel, named one of his sons Coleman.
For these reasons, we believe that Jacob was married to Anna Coleman, and then later to her sister, Mary.
With that said, we have no further information about either of these women. It is not clear whether Mary survived long enough to travel to Tennessee with Jacob and the younger children. After the land transaction with Mary in 1769, we have found no other record of Jacob that includes the name of a spouse.
Even though the autosomal evidence is triangulated to generations that appear to be too far back to be reliable, it is the only viable answer we have found. When coupled with the paper trail hints that we have, we are comfortable in offering the tentative conclusion that Anna and Mary Coleman were married to Jacob and the mothers of his children.
For these reasons, we believe that Jacob was married to Anna Coleman, and then later to her sister, Mary.
