Individual Details

Jacob Cox

(1727 - Aft 1809)

It is known that the father of Samuel, Jacob, Rebecca, and Nancy Cox is named Jacob. Y-DNA matches to John P. Cox and Phineas Cox suggest that they were probably nephews. Additional Y-DNA has now verified that the descendants of Jacob, Phineas, and John P. Cox are also related to a descendant of Phillip Cox and Dorcas Hull. This latest match is from a person who traces from Philip Cox, the son of Phillip and Dorcas. Jacob, Phineas, and John appear to have come from John Cox, a brother of the younger Philip. While the Y-DNA does not confirm John as Jacob's father, it is known that John had sons named Jacob and Samuel. Samuel appears to be the father of Phineas and John P. Cox. Y-DNA evidence also points to Thomas Cox being the son of Jacob. Paper evidence, and some autosomal DNA evidence suggests that Phillip, b. about 1755 or 1757, is also a son of Jacob. Online family trees that say that this is John Jacob Cox, and that he was married to Mary Ferguson, are in error. The John Cox who married Mary Ferguson in Halifax County, Virginia, was the son of a William Cox from Orange County, Virginia. The Y-DNA for this family is quite different from Jacob's descendants.
