At age 19 he enlisted in Company H, Ohio 82nd Infantry Regiment on 17 Dec 1861. He was promoted to Full Corporal on 01 January 1865 and mustered out on 24 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. The year is not clear in the record but he started to receive a Civil War pension on 2 January 18?? in Ohio; Certificate Number 379372.
In the 1870 Federal Census he is living with his wife, Nancy, in Linton Township, Allamakee County working as a shoemaker.
In the 1880 Federal Census he is living with his wife, Nancy, in Linton.
In the 1885 Iowa State Census he is living in Franklin Township, Allamakee County, with his wife Nancy and six children and is a shoemaker.
In the 1890 Federal Veterans Census he is listed in the Taylor, Union County, Ohio census with back, kidney, and bowl diseases.
In the 1895 Minnesota State Census and the 1900 Federal Census he is divorced and living in Paynesville, Stearns County, Minnesota.
On 7 February 1896 he was appointed the Postmaster for Paynesville lasting until 8 February 1900.
In the 1905 Minnesota State Census he and his wife Lucy are living in Stearns County.
In the 1910 Census he and his wife Lucy are still living in Paynesville.

It is not clear if Todd was a married or maiden surname. The certificate indicates she was a resident of Mason County, Washington and not divorced in last six months, has no living husband but it doesn't indicate if she is widowed.
Death
Some of the Minnesota death indexes list a 20 March 1918 death of David Selewer McGoon; however, Minnesota, Will Records, 1849-1985, Will Records Volume H 1905-1918, Page 325 clearly shows David DeLewis McGoon.
