Solomon ROYSE

(Abt 1803 - Bef 1856)

Documentation refers to Solomon's surname as Royse, Royce, Roice, and sometimes Roys.
The 1830 Cumberland County, Kentucky, Page 155, has Solomon Roise with two males under five, one male between 20 and 30 and one female between 20 and 30. Researcher Michael Moore indicates that the 1833 will of his ancestor James Young of Cumberland County, Kentucky lists as one of his surviving daughters a Sally Royse, wife of Solomon Royse. She was born ca1805.
The 1840 Clayton County, Iowa Census, Image 8, has Sollmon Royce with one male ten to 15 (James, age 12), one male 30 - 40 (Solomon, 37), two females under 5 (unknown), one female 5 to 10 (Sarah, age 7), and one female 30 to 40 (Sarah, 35).
Captain John Parker's Company of Iowa Dragoons Volunteers was mustered into the service of the United States at Fort Atkinson, Iowa, by Brevet Major Alexander Hooe, of the Regular Army, September 9, 1846. Its term of service was for twelve months, unless sooner discharged. The company at once became part of the garrison at Fort Atkinson of which it became an important adjunct, furnishing mounted men for scouting purposes, watching the movements of the Winnebago indians, and endeavoring to keep them within the limits of their reservation. It was subsequently determined by the War Department, however, that the services of the company could be dispensed with, and an order was issued to muster it out of the service. The records show that the company was mustered out, by Brevet Major Hooe, at Fort Atkinson, November 5, 1846. The roster was transcribed from the muster-out roll of the company with additional data from Mr. ELeid's early history and includes "Solomon Royse. Private. Age 43. No personal record obtained."
The 1850 Clayton County, Boardman Township, Iowa Census, Page 159, Image 304 has Solomon and his wife Sally and children James, Amanda, William, Hiram and Noah.
The 1852 Iowa State Special Census, Clayton County, Farmersburg Township lists his household as five males and three females of which two are voters and one is militia.
The Early Cumberland County, Kentucky Marriages list "Page, James married Roice, Sally on 11 Aug 1816 in Cumberland County, Kentucky." As of 2009 a connection has not been found.
Documenting Solomon is a very difficult and ongoing task because there is another Solomon in Adair County, Kentucky and each of the Solomon's wives is a Sarah/Sally. Further, there are variant spellings for the surname. Although there is a lot of information out there, I am very reluctant to put a vast amount of it into my database because it lacks a definitive connection to our Solomon and Sally.
