They were living with their children and his brother's family at 15 Avenue E East. They owned the house and he was a retail clothing merchant. He had married Lena (Unknown maiden name) in 1901. Lena had been previously married with two children who were adopted by Dave Smith (Esther and Ida). According to Lillian Shaw, Lena was related to Ben Smith's wife Celia.There were six children (the first two were from Lena's previous marriage). There may also be a Jake Smith from the previous marriage. Dave Smith's mother Ida Smith was born in Germany.

The following obit appeared in The Salina Journal, page 13, December 25, 1956:"Mrs. Lena Smith, for many years a resident of Salina, died early Tuesday in Kansas City Mo. where she had lived in recent years. She was the mother of Jake Smith, Larner Hotel, and Ada Smith, 240 S. 8th, owners of the Smith Clothing Company. They are in Kansas City. Mrs. Smith had been ill for
several years. Funeral arrangements have not been announced."
