In 1880 Federal Census and the 1885 Dakota Territory Census he is living with his parents in Fargo, Dakota Territory.
In 1898 he and Hannah were married in North Dakota and moved to Canada shortly thereafter. They lived in various mining and logging communities around Northwestern Ontario.
Two of the children (Nellie and Robert) were actually born at the Mikado Gold Mine and recorded as Rat Portage, Ont, CAN. Sally Brown discovered a folder in the local library which has the inhabitants of the Mikado Mines in 1901. "Silas Flatt 1876 ON" is included in the list. Rat Portage originally named Fort St. Charles in 1732 then claimed by Manitoba in 1882 and renamed Rat Portage. Ontario reclaimed it in 1892 and in 1905 was renamed Kenora; made up from the settlements of KEwatin, NOranda, and RAt Portage.
While living in Nipigon, Si headed a logging company and Hannah ran a boarding house and dining hall.
