"Rev. D. Cecil Flatt, 79, retired pastor, dies unexpectedly
Rev. D. Cecil Flatt, 79, of Plainville, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon at Auburn Memorial Hospital following surgery.
Born in Orangeville, Ont. Canada, the son of John and Elizabeth Bair Flatt, he graduated from Toronto University and Seminary and started his ministry in Verona, Ontario at the age of 21.
Mr. Flatt served mission posts in Northern Ontario Canada for 20 years and then in 1930 he accepted the pastorate in Ransomville. He was ordained in 1930 at Cortland Larger Parish. He served churches in Cambria, Cortland, Plainville, Lysander, and Cancinatus in New York State, and Johnstown, Pa.
Mr. Flatt retired to Plainville in 1950. He had been serving as supply pastor for the Cato and Meridian churches, and for the past three years, he has served as pastoral assistant of the First Presbyterian Church of Baldwinsville.
The title of pastor ameritus was bestowed upon the Rev. Mr. Flatt by the Plainville Christian Church in 1960.
Surviving are his widow Fleta Walroth Flatt; four sons, Lyall J. and Sterling B. Flatt of Cortland, G. Grenville Flatt of Tulsa, Okla., and Wilfred W. Flatt of Baldwinsville; three daughters, Mrs. William A. North of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Frederick Cummings of Schenectady, and Mrs. Charles R. Woodruff of Maplewood, N.J.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Plainville Christian Church, with Rev. Edwin Hambrick, associate conference ministry of the United Church of Christ of Syracuse, officiating, assisted by Rev. Robert Cassels, pastor of the Plainville Christian Church. Burial will be in Plainville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Jewell Funeral Home, Cato from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The body will be in state from 10 a.m. to noon at the Plainville Christian Church on Saturday.
